Instrument Cluster, Odometer Adaptation After Replacement
Model(s):
New Beetle 1999
Service
When replacing an instrument cluster in a 1999 New Beetle, use the following procedure to adapt (input) the correct odometer reading into the new cluster. It contains examples of various odometer readings (adaptation values).
Although lengthy, the procedure is basically completed in 5 steps.
1. - Obtain vehicle odometer reading (or determine from vehicle service history) and control module coding from the faulty instrument cluster.
2. - After installing new instrument cluster, code new instrument cluster to market version "Canada" (US vehicles, this is temporary).
3. - Convert odometer miles to kilometers (US vehicles only). Round kilometer reading on all vehicles (see examples).
4. - Input adaptation values (rounded kilometers).
5. - Set new instrument cluster coding to market version "USA" (US vehicles only).
Prior to performing this procedure, please review the following notes.
Note:
^ The odometer reading of the new instrument cluster must not be more than 100 km (63 miles) before adaptation.
^ The odometer reading to be transferred (adapted) to the new instrument cluster must exceed 100 km (63 miles).
^ Adapting the odometer reading is only possible once and only in a positive (upward) direction.
^ Adaptation sequence can be interrupted (prior to confirmation) with the "C" button of the VAG 1551/1552 ST.
^ Correcting a false entry which has been confirmed is not possible. The instrument cluster must be replaced with a new one (at Dealer's expense).
^ For US vehicles, the adaptation value MUST be converted to and entered in kilometers!
^ Convert miles to kilometers by multiplying (miles x 1.609 = KM).
^ For US vehicles, first set the "display" to kilometers and enter the adaptation value in kilometers.
^ After correctly entering adaptation value in kilometers, set the "display" back to miles (market version USA).
