Readiness Code, creating
NOTE: Do NOT switch OFF the ignition during the test sequence.
Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool with VAG 1551/3 ad adaptor cable
Test conditions
- Vehicle stationary
- Electrical consumers switched OFF (radiator fan must NOT run during checks)
- A/C switched OFF (if installed)
- Intake Air Temperature less than 90 °C See display group 04, display zone 4
- Engine Coolant Temperature less than 95 °C See display group 04, display zone 3
- Throttle valve angle less than 10 degree angle See display group 03, display zone 3
Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool, [1][2][3]Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
- Switch ON ignition
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address word 01 "Engine electronics"
Work step 1:Check DTC memory
Display will appear as shown
Rapid data transfer HELP
Select Function XX
- Press 0 and 2 buttons to select Function 02 "Check DTC memory"
- Press Q button to enter input
The number of DTC's stored or "NO DTC's recognised" will be shown on the display.
X DTC's recognized!
If a DTC is stored:
- Repair all DTC's shown on print out using appropriate table:
P0 codes, P Code Charts
P1 codes, P Code Charts
If NO DTC's stored
- Press -> button.
Work step 2: Erase DTC memory
Display will appear as shown

Select Function XX
- Press 0 and 5 buttons to select Function 05 "Erase DTC memory"
- Press Q button to enter input
Display will appear as shown
Rapid data transfer ->
DTC memory is erased!
- Press -> button.

- Press -> button after 30 seconds (minimum).
Significance of 8 digit number block in display zone
If specifications not obtained:
- Check DTC memory Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If specification obtained:
- Maintain 1800 to 2200 rpm engine speed.
- Press -> button
Work step 6: Oxygen sensor aging frequency, diagnosis

- Maintain engine speed between 1800 and 2200 rpm until display in zone 4 switches from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue maintaining engine speed between 1800 and 2200 rpm until specification "B1-S1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
If specifications not obtained:
- Check DTC memory Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If specification obtained:
- Continue maintaining engine speed between 1800 and 2200 rpm
- Press C button.
Work step 7: Three Way Catalyst, diagnosis

- Press 0, 4 and 6 buttons to select "Display group 46"
- Press Q button to enter input
Display will appear as shown (1 to 4 = Display zones)

- Maintain engine speed between 1800 and 2200 rpm until display in zone 4 switches from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
- Continue maintaining engine speed between 1800 and 2200 rpm until display "Cat. B1 OK." appears in display zone 4.
NOTE: Three Way Catalyst diagnosis takes approx. 60 seconds.
If specifications not obtained:
- Check DTC memory Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If specification obtained:
- Press C button.
Work step 8: Evaporative Emissions System diagnosis (tank venting system), activating
NOTE: Engine must not be loaded during this diagnostic because the diagnosis will be interrupted and will not start again until the engine is revved-up.
Test conditions
- Intake Air Temperature less than 90 °C See Display group 04, display zone 4
- Coolant temperature less than 95 °C See Display group 04, display zone 3
- Throttle valve angle less than 10 degree angle See Display group 03, display zone 3

- Start engine and let idle.

NOTE: When the diagnostic is initiated by the ECM, the display in zone 4 switches from "Test OFF" to "Test 0N "
- Allow engine to continue idling until display "T B V OK." appears in display zone 4.
NOTE: If the display switches from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during the test, rev-up briefly and the test will repeat.
If specifications not obtained:
- Check DTC memory Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If specification obtained:
- Press 3 button (VAG 1551) or Uparrow button (VAG 1552).
Display will appear as shown (1 to 4 Display zones)
Basic setting 71 ->

- Allow engine to continue idling.
If diagnostic is initiated from ECM the display in zone 4 switches from "Test OFF" to "Test ON"
- Allow engine to continue idling until specification "SYST. OK." is displayed in zone 4.
NOTE:
- If the display in zone 4 switches from "Test ON" to "Test OFF" during the diagnostic and "Abort" is displayed in zone 2, repeat the "Leak diagnostic" check.
- When repeating the diagnostic it can take up to 60 seconds before the display in zone 4 switches from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".
If specifications not obtained:
- Check DTC memory Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
If specification obtained:
- Press -> button.
Work step 9: Readiness Code, recording
- Record the Readiness Code, Readiness Code Reading
