Automatic Transmission, Whining Noise

Model(s):
Jetta with 2.8L VR6 and Auto. Transmission 2000, 2001

Condition

Whining noise from automatic transmission from approx. 37 to 42 MPH.

Service

Prior to transmission replacement:

- Inspect for previous installation of solid left axle shaft (diameter is approx. 25mm).

If left axle shaft is hollow (approx. 42mm):

- Install new left axle shaft (see VESIS) Part No: 1J0407271EH (equipped with bolts) or 1J0407271CH (new bolts required).

CAUTION!
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Dept. for the latest parts information.

- Road test vehicle with customer.

If repair is acceptable to customer:

- No further action is necessary.

If left axle shaft is solid or if repair (installation of solid left axle shaft) is NOT acceptable to customer:

- Remove transmission (see VESIS).





- Inspect transmission build date (arrow as shown) and record on Repair Order.





Build date reads: ddmmy (i.e., 13080)
Example shows build date 13 August 2000.

- Install new transmission (see VESIS). Prior to transmission installation:

- Inspect and record new transmission build date on work order.

Note:
If transmission is required, transfer new axle shaft to replacement transmission.

When procedure applies to vehicles within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, use the table as shown.
