5-speed automatic transmission 01V, general information
Maximum possible care and cleanliness, as well as proper tools, are essential for successful transmission repairs. All general rules of basic workshop safety apply when repairing any transmission.
A number of general instructions that apply to most individual repair procedures, are summarized here.

Torque converter
The torque converter is equipped with a lock-up clutch. The closing of the lock-up clutch is determined by the engine load and speed. The lock-up clutch drives 3rd, 4th and 5th gears mechanically without slip.

Transmission
The 5-speed automatic transmission 01V is equipped with five hydraulically activated forward gears. When the lock-up clutch is closed these forward gears become mechanically driven gears by cutting out torque converter slip.

Diagnosis
Before performing repair work on the transmission, determine the malfunction as accurately as possible by referring to Transmission Control Systems; Testing and Inspection.

Automatic transmission fluid (VW ATF)
VW ATF is yellow in color.
^ Checking ATF level or changing ATF is performed according to maintenance procedures.
^ Only VW ATF must be used.

Final drive
The final drive is filled with SAE 75W90 (synthetic oil).
The final drive is filled for life.
