Start Of Injection, Dynamically Checking And Adjusting
NOTE:
- Dynamically checking and adjusting start of injection is only possible in function 04 "Engine basic setting".
- The start of injection must always be checked after replacing the toothed belt or loosening the injection pump bolts or toothed belt sprockets and adjusted if necessary.
Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench 5 to 50 Nm
- VAG 1551 Scan tool (or VAG 1552 with adapter cable VAG 1551/3)
Checking and adjustment conditions
- Mechanical engine basic setting OK.
- Toothed belt tension OK.
Work sequence
- Connect VAG 1551/1552 (Connecting scan tool and selecting engine electronics control module. [1][2][3]Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool)

- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic setting" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

- Press button -0- three times to select "Display group number 0" and confirm entry with -Q- button.

System in basic setting 0 ->

- Check coolant temperature in display field 7.
Specification: less than 73 (equates to 85 degree C)
Continue with check only when coolant temperature is attained.
The start of injection in display field 2 is dependent on the fuel temperature in display field 9.
A - Display field 2 start of injection
B - Display field 9 fuel temperature
C - Specified range for start of injection
Example: The numerical value 90 in display field 9 -B- corresponds to a numerical value range of 34 to 73 in display field 2 -A-.
NOTE: If the start of injection specifications are within zone -C-, no adjustment is required. After repairs e.g. removing and installing the injection pump or adjusting the timing then the start of injection is to be set to the mean valve (dashed line) of the specification zone -C-.
If the start of injection (timing) is outside the specification tolerances:
- Remove connecting pipe between charge air cooler and intake manifold.
- Remove upper toothed belt guard.
- Loosen two injection pump sprocket securing bolts -1-.
- Position 22 mm wrench onto hub nut -2- to counter-hold pump shaft.
- Loosen 3rd injection pump sprocket bolt and turn pump shaft slightly:
To left = retards start of injection
To right = advances start of injection
NOTE: DO NOT loosen the hub nut -2-. If nut -2- is loosened the injection pump basic setting will be altered and this cannot be reset with normal workshop equipment.
Version -A-: Securing bolts with chamfer on shaft and point -arrows-
- Tighten new injection pump sprocket securing bolts.
Tightening torque: 20 Nm
NOTE:
- After dynamic test of start of injection, securing bolts must be tightened 90 degree (1/4 turn) further.
- Because they are stretch bolts they must only be used once.
Version -B-: Securing bolts without chamfer on shaft and without point
- Tighten old injection pump sprocket securing bolts.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm
NOTE: Do not replace securing bolts.
Continuation for all versions
- Observe value in field 2 and, if necessary, repeat adjustment until the displayed value stays at the mean value of specified range -C-.
Version -A-: Securing bolts with chamfer on shaft and point -arrows-
- Tighten new injection pump sprockets securing bolts 1/4 turn (90 degree) further.
Continuation for all versions
- Press the -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- for the "End output" function and confirm input with the -Q- button.
- Switch ignition off.
- Install connecting pipe between charge air cooler and intake manifold.
- Install upper toothed belt guard.
- Check DTC memory and, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase. [1][2]Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- If the DTC memory has been erased or the Diesel Direct Fuel Injection Engine Control Module -J248- was disconnected from permanent battery positive (B+), the readiness code must be generated again. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
