Vehicle Information
Condition
Clutch, Friction Material Flaw (SACHS Only)
It has been identified that some SACHS clutch components may have a developmental (friction material) flaw which may cause premature clutch disc wear.
Note:
The result of this failure does not compromise drivability.
Technical Background
Friction material flaw on clutch plate or pressure plate which leads to burnt, shredded, or missing clutch plate material on SACHS clutch plate ONLY.
Tip:
These flaws on supplier SACHS clutch plate and pressure plate are covered under Limited New Vehicle Warranty 4 years/50,000 miles whichever occurs first as stated in the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual.
Production Solution
1. Spring diaphragm heated during installation after VIN 1K_6M850645
2. Shape of leaf spring changed CW08/07 (after production of vehicle)
Note:
All applicable replacement parts have latest countermeasure and are not affected.
Service
When servicing a vehicle for a suspected clutch flaw or when replacing a clutch plate it is necessary to identify which supplier produced the clutch plate.
Note:
Only SACHS clutch plates are affected by this flaw and therefore only issues with the SACHS clutch plate will be covered under this technical bulletin.
There are no known friction material flaws with LUK clutch plate or pressure plate.
Identifying clutch disc supplier
Clutch plate supplier name will be found in this area.
Tip:
Please note missing clutch plate material. This is a possibility of what may be observed when servicing.
Identifying Pressure Plate Supplier
Pressure Plate supplier name will be found in this area.
Note:
Only SACHS clutch plates are affected by this flaw and therefore only issues with the SACHS clutch plate will be covered under this Technical Bulletin.
There are no known developmental flaws with LUK clutch plate or pressure plate. These provided types of wear and tear issues below are NOT covered under Limited New Vehicle Warranty.
Examples of Wear and Tear Issues
Clutch plate material burnt.
Blued heat spots on pressure plate contact surface.
Heat spots on pressure plate contact surface.
Note:
DO NOT mix suppliers for clutch plate, pressure plate or flywheel if they are found to be out of specification. If a SACHS clutch plate, pressure plate or flywheel is removed from the vehicle, a SACHS clutch plate, pressure plate or flywheel must be used during assembly.
The same statement applies if vehicle is equipped with a LUK clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel.
If clutch plate is damaged and NO flywheel damage has occurred, replacing only the clutch plate and pressure plate is acceptable.
If flywheel damage has been identified, replace flywheel, clutch plate and pressure plate, see Repair Manual Group 30 Clutch, Clutch Servicing in ElsaWeb.
