Lighting - Water Intrusion Into Tail Lamps

Technical Background
Water intrusion in either inner rear tail lamp assembly may be caused by gasket damage in area indicated in this technical bulletin.

Production Solution
Plastic washer installed on rear tail lamp assembly mounting screw as of VIN: 3VWSG71K35M624647.

Service





Tip: Do Not replace tail lamp housing for water intrusion caused by a leaking gasket. Replace tail lamp housing gasket any time tail lamp housing assembly is removed.

Add one washer to both tail lamp assemblies and replace housing gaskets as follows:
- Remove inner tail lamp assemblies. See Repair Manual, Electrical Equipment, Lights, Switches - exterior Rear lights , Rear lights in rear lid, removing and installing.
- Remove bulb see Repair Manual, Electrical Equipment, Lights, Switches - exterior Rear lights , Rear lights in rear lid - bulb holder, removing and installing.
- Dry assemblies using compressed air or hot air blower.
- Remove and discard old housing gasket.





- Insert 1 plastic washer Part No: 1KM 945 201 on each housing, where indicated (black arrow).





- Install new housing gasket Part No: 1K5 945 191 over washer (gasket must seat on housing).
- Install tail lamp assemblies. See "Repair Manual", Electrical Equipment, Lights, Switches - exterior Rear lights , Rear lights in rear lid, removing and installing.
- Tighten housing nuts to 3.5 Nm (30 in. lbs.) plus/minus 0.5 Nm. (4 in. lbs.).
