Ignition System - Charge Lamp ON on Cold Start Up
ConditionCharging System Warning Light Illuminated after Cold Start
Charging system warning light is illuminated on a cold start-up and generator charges at low voltage. If engine RPM is increased over 1200 RPM, or if engine reaches normal operating temperature, then the charging system warning light will no longer illuminate.
NOTE:
DO NOT replace the generator for this condition.

Technical Background
Impulse voltage from the ignition coil may interfere with the voltage on the L-terminal of the generator (L-potential). This degradation in voltage affects the generators ability to function properly on a cold start-up. As a result, the charging system warning light will illuminate. When the engine RPM exceeds 1200 RPM, the generator will self-excite, function properly, and the charging system warning light will go out.
Production Solution
As of VIN 3VWXJ71K27M034983 (engine number BPY719653), all Jetta 2.0L vehicles are manufactured with the improved ignition coils.
Service
- Check suspect vehicle for ignition coil part number 07K905715B.
If vehicle is equipped with this ignition coil part number:
- Replace all 4 ignition coils with part number 07K905715C as outlined in Repair Manual group 28 Ignition system, glow plug system in ElsaWeb.
NOTE: To avoid damaging ignition coils, use tool T40039 to remove coil.
DO NOT twist ignition coil when installing.
DO NOT use any object to tap the ignition coil into position.
After replacement of ignition coils:
- Verify that charging system warning light is no longer illuminated on a cold engine start-up.
Tip: Part number(s) are for reference only. Always see ETKA for the latest part(s) information.
If condition persists after replacement of ignition coils, or, if vehicle is already equipped with improved coil and this condition exists, please contact VW Helpline for further assistance.
