Generic Scan Tool - Turbocharger
Charge Air System, Checking For Leaks
NOTE: Overview of turbocharging system.
Recommended special tools and equipment
- Testing unit for turbo charger V.A.G 1687 with adapter V.A.G 1687/5
without illustration:
- Engine leak detection spray G 001 800 A1 or ultrasonic measuring device V.A.G 1842
NOTE: It is absolutely necessary to follow the safety precautions for engine leak detection spray listed on the can.
Test sequence
Observe safety precautions.
Observe rules for cleanliness.
- Remove noise insulation pan.
- Disengage locking clip -A- and disconnect charge air hose -B- from charge air pipe.
- Connect adapter V.A.G 1687/5 to charge air hose -A- and twist it about 90 degrees -B-.
Prepare testing unit for turbo charger V.A.G 1687 as follows:
- Remove pressure regulator valve -2- completely and close valves -3- and -4-.
NOTE: In order to be able to turn pressure regulator valve -2-, rotary knob must be pulled upward.
Connect testing unit for turbo charger V.A.G 1687 as shown.
- Connect pressure hose -1- of pressurized air supply on testing unit for turbo charger V.A.G 1687.
NOTE: If water is located in viewing glass, drain it via water drain screw -6-.
- Open valve -3-.
- Set test pressure to 0.5 bar on pressure regulator valve -2-.
CAUTION: Pressure must not exceed 0.5 bar. A pressure set too high may damage the engine.
- Open valve -4- and wait until testing circuit has filled.
- If necessary, continue to regulate testing pressure to 0.5 bar.
- Check charge air system for leaks by listening and by touch using engine leak detection spray G 001 800 A1 or using ultrasonic measuring device V.A.G 1742.
NOTE:
- Using the ultrasonic measuring device V.A.G 1842: Operating instructions of ultrasonic measuring device
- A small quantity of air dissipates via valves in engine. A retaining pressure test is not possible for this reason.
- Before removing adapter, discharge pressure in testing circuit by pulling off coupling from adapter.
- Charge pressure hoses and their connections must be free of oil and grease before re-installation
