Compass: Description and Operation






Compass

Before troubleshooting or servicing, the technicians must be familiar with the function and operation of the compass system.

When performing service work or Fault-Fnding, use => Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051) or Vehicle Diagnosis and Service System (VAS 5052) in the function "Guided Fault Finding",.

When the battery is reconnected, check any affected system or component (radio, clock, comfort electrical connection etc..) according to the repair manual and/or the operating instructions.

By the use of magnetically adhered antennae on vehicle roof, there is the hazard that the compass module will malfunction due to magnetic influence and remaining magnetization of the vehicle roof. For complaints of inaccurate or faulty direction displays on the compass module, ask the customer whether a magnetically adhered antenna is being used before starting repair work.

The Roof Display Unit (J702) and Vehicle Position Recognition Control Module (J603) under back of headliner are part of the compass equipment. The Roof Display Unit has the following functions, depending on equipment:

Compass display

Auxiliary heater display

Clock display

Telematics operating buttons

The desired display mode can be selected using the buttons on the display unit.

The current compass direction, in which the vehicle is directed, is displayed via the compass display with up to 2 letters (e.g. N = north, NW = northwest). 8 different compass directions can be displayed.
