TDI Vehicles Equipped with Mis-fuel Inhibitor
Technical Background
Starting in MY 2013 all VW TDI vehicles come equipped with a mis-fuel inhibitor installed in the fuel tank filler neck to prevent accidental mis-fueling of the fuel tank with the incorrect fuel. This document is being published to help answer any questions regarding this component.

Service
The mis-fuel inhibitor has been installed to prevent accidental mis-fueling of the fuel tank with the incorrect fuel.
The mis-fuel inhibitor is designed to unlock and allow fueling only when a standard 24mm Diesel nozzle is installed on the filling pump at the fuel stations. The standard 24mm Diesel nozzle will fully engage the locking tabs on both the left and right side of the filler neck allowing the spring loaded locking collar to slide downwards, unlocking the restrictor flap allowing the nozzle to be inserted for fuel filling.
Tip:
The mis-fueling inhibitor will only unlock with a standard 24mm fueling nozzle with a minimum dimension of 23.6mm and maximum 25.8mm, allowing for damaged or worn nozzles.
Some fuel stations may have their fuel filler pumps equipped with a 21mm Gasoline filler nozzle. The 21mm Gasoline nozzle cannot fully engage both of the locking tabs at the same time to release the mis-fuel inhibitor,
making fueling with the 21mm nozzle not possible.
Other stations may have a 30mm high capacity filling nozzle installed on the filling pump designed for quicker filling of large trucks. These nozzles also will not release the mis-fuel inhibitor, making fueling with a 30mm nozzle not possible.
To prevent a customer from being unable to re-fuel in an area where a standard 24mm Diesel filler nozzle is not available, Volkswagen has released a "Diesel Fueling Adapter" P/N 000072709 to allow re-fueling with either the 21mm Gasoline or the 30mm high capacity Diesel nozzles.
Note:
The Diesel Fueling Adapter should only be used when a standard Diesel nozzle is not available, and NOT as a common practice of re-fueling.
