Possible Oil Leak after Oil Filter Change

Follow the procedure outlined in this bulletin to repair vehicles that may experience an oil leak concern after the oil filter has been changed.

Technical Background

Due to the mounting design of the engine oil cooler, it is possible for the oil cooler to become loose during an oil service. If this happens, an oil leak may occur between the oil cooler and the oil filter adaptor housing. This condition can be corrected by tightening the oil cooler mounting nut.

DO NOT replace any parts for this condition.

Production Solution

Not applicable.

Service

This symptom is caused when the oil filter is removed, and may be more prevalent during the vehicles first oil service. The rotational force required to remove the oil filter may cause the oil cooler to rotate from its initial position. Additionally, the mounting nut for the oil cooler may become loose. If this happens, an oil leak may occur around the location where the oil cooler attaches to the oil filter adaptor housing.

Note:
If you are repairing this concern in between oil change intervals, ensure oil level is correct before returning vehicle to customer.

^ Location of leak.

To repair this condition, perform the following steps:

After the oil filter has been removed:

^ Check to verify that the mounting nut is tight.

^ If the mounting nut is loose, tighten the nut to 25Nm (18.5 ft. lbs.).

^ Reinstall the oil filter.

^ Adjust engine oil level to compensate for any loss during filter removal.

^ Start engine and let idle for 30 seconds.

^ Shut engine off and wait 3 minutes.

^ Check oil level, and inspect for leaks.

If leak is still present, continue regular diagnosis procedures.
