Positive Crankcase Ventilation: Service and Repair
Fig. 105 BLOCKED P.C.V. SYSTEM (NON TURBO ONLY):
***UPDATED BY TSB 22104, SEPTEMBER 1983
Flame trap:
If the flame trap gets clogged, clean or replace the flame trap.
Symptoms for a clogged flame trap are:
- oil dipstick "jumps out" of the pipe
- oil leakage at the seals in the cylinder block Fig. 105.
- seals must not always be replaced if they are leaking due to a blocked flame trap. Fix the flame trap, clean the engine and check if seals are still leaking or not.
Fig. 147 FLAME TRAP:
On year models previous to 1983, VOLVO recommends to replace the old style flame trap with the new style trap found on later model vehicles. Fig. 147. Here are the new part numbers for the updated flame trap:
PART: PART NUMBER:
Nipple (Y-Piece) # 1336681-0
Flame trap # 463835-9
Hose # 1336682-8
Hose tie # 948211-8 (fitted at the larger end of the hose)
Fig. 145 OIL-TRAP DRAIN HOSE:
Drain hose:
If the drain hose is incorrectly installed or if it is to short (outlet must be below oil level), it's possible that the crankcase ventilation will not function. The hose may also hit the crankshaft and could get damaged. Fig. 145.
Fig. 146 OIL-TRAP DRAIN HOSE:
When the oil trap is being removed, make sure that the drain hose does not come up as well. If drain hose needs to be replaced or serviced, the oil pan must be removed to make sure that the hose is in the correct position when installed. Fig. 146.
