Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints: Service and Repair

1. Mark position of propeller shaft in relation to flanges. Remove propeller shaft.
2. Disconnect propeller shaft from flanges. Disconnect support bearing and remove propeller shaft from vehicle.
3. Clean off dirt from circlips/snap rings on damaged universal joints.
4. Remove circlips/snap rings. If circlips/snap rings are difficult to remove, tap them with a punch and apply rust oil before using circlip/snap ring pliers.
5. Remove bearing cups

6. Lightly clamp propeller shaft in a vice, adjust position so that yoke rests on jaws.
7. Using a plastic mallet or copper hammer, tap propeller shaft flange as near as possible to bearing cups until cups protrude by 3 mm (0.12-0.16 in).

CAUTION: Do not tap on propeller shaft.

8. Withdraw bearing cups with vice.

9. Support propeller shaft on for example a hammer handle, and clamp bearing cup in a vice.
10. Carefully pry out bearing cups using propeller shaft.
11. Clean bearing seats in propeller shaft and flange.
12. Remove bearing cups and seals from new spider.

13. Make sure that needle bearings and seals are in position in bearing cups.

14. Position spider in yoke. Install one of bearing cups on spider. Tap bearing cup lightly until seated.
15. Press in bearing cup using vice and suitable sleeve.
16. Press in bearing cups by approximately 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 in).
16. Install circlips/snap rings.

17. Check position of spider. Make sure that end is centered in opposite end of yoke.

18. Install other bearing cup in yoke. Tap lightly until secure.
19. Press in bearing cup and install circlip/snap ring. When second bearing cup is pressed into position, first bearing cup is pressed against its circlip/snap ring.

20. Install spider in propeller shaft yoke. Insert spider in yoke and install bearing cups, one at a time as previously described.

21. Check universal joint. If joint is stiff or binds, place propeller shaft yoke or flange yoke between vice as illustrated and lightly tap ends with a plastic mallet or copper hammer.

22. Check support bearing. Bearing must rotate without noise or binding. Check rubber bearing mounting.

23. Replacing support bearing/rubber mounting:

- Remove rubber mounting

- Remove bearing with a drift

CAUTION: Take care not to damage the dust cover.

- Install bearing by pressing on inner race.

- Install rubber mounting.
1 Dust cover
2 Bearing
3 Rubber mounting

NOTE: Install as indicated adjacent.

24. Check dust cover between front and rear sections. Lubricate splines with grease P/N 1 161 033-4.
25. Assemble propeller shaft. Assemble according to identification marks and make sure that propeller shaft yokes are in correct position.

NOTE: Angular variations between yokes cause vibrations.

26. Install propeller shaft. Install one bolt in each flange end. Check that spring and washer are positioned correctly in rubber mounting. Reinstall support bearing and bracket. Install all flange bolts, centralize bearing and tighten.
