RE: SERVICE CAMPAIGN 44: CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS UPDATE
On December 23, 1986, Volvo Cars of North America announced a voluntary Recall Campaign. This Campaign affects certain 1983 and 1984 240 series vehicles with B23F engines sold and registered in the state of California.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has performed emission tests on a small number of model year 1983 Volvo 240 vehicles. The test results for some of the vehicles exceeded the established limits on Hydrocarbons (HC) and Nitrogenoxides (NOx). The California limits on NOx are more stringent than the U.S. federal limits which apply to the other 49 states.
The corrective action win include the installation of a delay valve in both the ignition and fuel injection system, as well as a minor modification on the electronic control unit.
Approximately 24,000 vehicles are involved in this action. There are two repair procedures involved:
Repair Code B - For vehicles with manual transmissions.
Repair Code C - For vehicles with automatic transmissions.
The standard campaign fo-m will be utilized for reimbursement.
A complete description of repair requirements and claim submission procedures is included with this dealer package. It is the dealer's responsibility to review the details provided in the informational materials Listed below with all dealership personnel involved:
- Service Manager Bulletin, Gr. 23 No. 13
- Technical Information & Instructional Bulletin, Gr. 23 No. 44
- Parts Bulletin, Gr. 2C No. 28
- Owner Letter
