Trailing Arm: Service and Repair


1. Raise and support rear of vehicle.
2. Position a suitable jack under rear axle housing, then raise rear axle housing to compress springs.
3. Disconnect lower shock absorber at lower mounting, then remove lower spring attaching screw.
4. Slowly lower jack until spring releases from trailing arm, then move spring backwards so that it is free from arm.
5. Raise jack until axle housing is in a level position.
6. Disconnect trailing arm from axle and frame mounting brackets and remove arm.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Torque trailing arm to mounting bracket attaching bolts to 85 ft. lbs., shock absorber lower mounting bolt and nut to 65 ft.lbs., and spring attaching screw to 15 ft. lbs.
