Removal

1. Unload the overdrive. Lift the rear wheels from the ground and run with the overdrive engaged. Then depress the clutch pedal and stop the engine.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.





3. Remove gear shift lever.
In vehicle:
- Remove the ash tray and holder assembly.
- Remove the frame around the gear shift lever.
- Disconnect the gearshift lever cover from floor.
- Remove the snap-ring.
- Protect gear shift lever with paper, etc.
Under vehicle:
- Disconnect the gear shift rod at the gear shift lever.
- Remove the lock screw. Use tool 5181 to press out the pivot pin.
- Push up the gear shift lever.





4. Transmission rear end:
- Disconnect propeller shaft at transmission. Use tool P/N 5244.
- Separate exhaust pipe at joint.
- Detach bracket from exhaust pipe.
- Remove crossmember assembly. At the same time detach it from the rear support (rubber bushing).
- Remove rear support from transmission rear end.
- Disconnect connectors at overdrive, back-up light connector and solenoid.
- Cut the plastic clamp at gear shift assembly for wiring harness.
5. Transmission front end:
- Remove starter motor retaining bolts.
- Hydraulic clutch - remove slave cylinder from bellhousing and upper bolts holding the bell housing.
- Mechanical clutch - detach clutch cable from release fork and bellhousing.





6. Remove transmission:
- Position fixture P/N 5972 under transmission. The fixture should be in its rear position. Tighten the bolts carefully.
- Remove lower bolts holding bellhousing.
- Lower transmission. Make sure wiring harness is free.
