Idle Speed

Fig. 379 DISCONNECT THROTTLE CONTROL ROD:

NOTE:
The idle speed is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU). Do not adjust idle speed, unless it is out of specified tolerances (see emission sticker or "SPECIFICATIONS").

1. Disconnect the throttle control rod at the cable pulley. Fig. 379.
2. Check cable assembly, pulley and throttle for smooth operation.

Fig. 380 ADJUST THROTTLE AND CRUISE CONTROL CABLES:

3. Adjust throttle and cruise control cables so they are both stretched at idle, but don't affect control pulley position. At full throttle the control pulley should touch the stop. When returned, pulley should touch the return stop Fig. 380.

Fig. 381 ADJUST AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION KICKDOWN CABLE:

4. Check kick-down cable (if equipped) adjustment by pressing the gas pedal to the floor and measuring the distance between cable sleeve and clip. Fig. 381. Do not operate throttle control by hand, it can give you a wrong reading. Measurement should reed 50.4 - 52.6 mm (1.98 - 2.07 in), adjust as necessary. In idle position the measurement should reed 0.25 - 1 mm (0.01 - 0.04 in).

Fig. 382 CONNECT AND ADJUST LINK ROD:

5. Install link rod. Place a 2 mm (0.08 in) feeler gauge between control pulley and idle stop. Adjust link rod so that clearance between lever stop screw and stop is 0.1 mm (0.004 in) Fig. 382.

Fig. 383 ADJUST CONTROL PULLEY MICRO SWITCH:

6. To adjust control pulley micro switch you must connect a test lamp between the battery positive terminal and yellow wire connector Fig. 383. at micro switch. Adjust micro switch so it closes (test light illuminates) 2.5 - 1 mm (0.1 - 0.04 in) before pulley touches full throttle stop. Disconnect test light.

NOTE:
Vehicles modified for high altitude should have micro switch disconnected.

Fig. 384 ADJUST MICRO SWITCH AT THROTTLE LEVER:

7. Connect test light from battery positive terminal to terminal #4 (grey - red wire) at throttle lever micro switch. Fig. 384. Place a 0.3 mm (0.012 in) feeler gauge between lever screw and stop.
8. Screw out upper adjustment screw until test lamp goes off. Then turn in screw until lamp lights up. Check adjustment with a 2 mm (0.008 in) and a 0.6 mm (0.024 in) feeler gauge. With 0.2 mm gauge the lamp should light and with the 0.6 mm gauge the lamp should be off. Disconnect test lamp.
9. Check idle speed with engine at operating temperature. Idle speed must be 750 ± 20 RPM.
