Idle Speed
Fig. 390 REMOVING COMPONENTS:
NOTE:
The idle speed is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU). Do not adjust idle speed, unless it is out of specified tolerances (see emission sticker or "SPECIFICATIONS").
1. Remove the following to adjust idle speed.
Air control valve and crankcase ventilation hoses (1) from air intake hose (3).
Air mass meter connector (6).
Tie band (4) around air intake hose.
Air intake hose (3).
Tie band (8) around cable harness and fuel distributor pipe.
Ignition cable (5) from cyl. 1 spark plug.
Connector for cyl. 1 injector (2) and left side knock sensor (7).
Move cable harness to one side.
Fig. 391 ADJUSTING TROTTLE:
2. Remove link rod from throttle drum and loosen adjustment screw locking nut (A)
3. Turn adjusting screw counter clockwise until butterfly is completely closed. Unscrew adjusting screw until it just touches link arm, Then a further 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. Tighten locking nut.
Fig. 392 CHECK TROTTLE SWITCH SETTING:
4. Check throttle switch by opening switch and listening for a "click".
5. Adjust throttle switch by loosening retaining screws (3 mm screw). Turn switch slightly clockwise. Turn switch back again until "click" is heard. Tighten retaining screws. Recheck setting.
Fig. 393 ADJUST THROTTLE PULLEY AND CABLE:
6. Check for smooth operation of throttle pulley and cable.
7. Adjust throttle and cruise control cables so they are both stretched at idle, but don't affect control pulley position. At idle the control pulley should touch the stop.
8. With the gas pedal fully depressed, the control pulley should touch the full throttle stop.
Fig. 394 CONNECT AND ADJUST LINK ROD:
9. Connect link rod.
10. Place a 1 mm (0.04 in) feeler gauge between throttle pulley and idle speed stop.Clearance between throttle lever and adjustment screw should now be 0.1 mm (0.004 in). Adjust link rod as needed.
Fig. 395 ADJUST AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION KICKDOWN CABLE:
11. Check kick-down cable (if equipped) adjustment by pressing the gas pedal to the floor and measuring the distance between cable sleeve and clip, Do not operate throttle control by hand, it can give you a wrong reading. Measurement should reed 50.4 - 52.6 mm (1.98 - 2.07 in), adjust as necessary. In idle position the measurement should reed 0.25 - 1 mm (0.01 - 0.04 in).
12. Reassemble all components.
Fig. 326 IDLE SPEED TEST CONNECTOR:
13. Run engine until it has reached operating temperature. Let it idle for an additional five minutes.
14. Ground red - white wire at the test connector. Air conditioner must be off.
Fig. 396 ADJUST IDLE SPEED:
15. Adjust idle screw to 700 RPM with the idle screw.
16. Disconnect ground wire at test connector.
17. Idle speed should increase to 750 ± 20 RPM.
18. Disconnect all test equipment.
