Replacement of Components Following Collision

REPLACEMENT OF COMPONENTS FOLLOWING COLLISION

The following components must be replaced after a collision in which the bag assembly has been deployed:
- Bag assembly
- Steering wheel
- Contact reel
- Seat belt tensioners (780)
- Crash sensor

Note: The bag assembly has a ten digit identification number which must be quoted when ordering new parts.

Note: It is only necessary to replace the crash sensor if:
- fault code 1 has been registered, or
- it is not possible to cancel a fault code after a repair has been carried out; in other words, if an uncorrected faults is still present, or
- there is mechanical damage to the crash sensor, its mounting bracket or wiring, or
- the floor adjacent to the crash sensor is damaged in any way.

Important! If fault code 1 is displayed, the crash sensor must be replaced.

Preliminary procedure

Turn ignition switch to off.

Disconnect battery ground lead.

Remove soundproofing panel under steering wheel, together with knee bolster, to provide access to connectors behind instrument panel.

Remove bag assembly

Remove bag assembly by undoing the two Torx bolts at the rear. Disconnect the connector and lift out assembly.

Turn steering wheel slightly t9 reach bolts. Slacken, but do not remove, retaining nut in wheel hub.

Connect battery ground cable

Drive car forward on smooth surface to ensure that front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

Remove steering wheel

Disconnect battery ground cable.

Remove retaining nut in wheel hub.

Remove locking screw in end of plastic ribbon from "parking" hole in wheel (leaving screw in ribbon). Lift off wheel and pull wiring, plastic ribbon and locking screw through opening in wheel.

Remove covers around steering column

Remove indicator and wiper stalks.

Remove contact reel complete with mounting plate

Open connector behind instrument panel.

Separate contact reel from mounting plate and fit new reel.

Install new contact reel and mounting plate

(Remember to rejoin connector behind instrument panel.)

Ensure that lead is not pinched.

Install indicator and wiper stalks

Zero new contact reel

Turn contact reel to right end position. Turn approx. 3 turns to left. Screw hole must be positioned at "eight o'clock" as illustrated. Lock reel using locking screw.

Caution! Do not turn steering wheel or contact reel pin will shear.

Install new steering wheel

Carefully pull contact reel lead through hole in steering wheel. Place wheel in position with contact reel locking screw in center hole. Insert and finger-tighten retaining nut.

Remove locking screw from locking position (leave attached to ribbon) and place in "parking" hole in steering wheel.

Check steering wheel position

Reconnect battery ground lead.

Drive car forward on smooth surface to ensure that front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

Steering wheel position incorrect:

Disconnect battery ground lead.

Remove retaining nut.

Remove locking screw at end of plastic ribbon from "parking" hole in steering wheel. Remove steering wheel and pull wiring, plastic ribbon and locking screw through opening in wheel.

Zero contact reel.

When steering wheel position is correct:

Tighten wheel retaining nut to 33 Nm (24.5 ft.lb).

Install knee bolster and soundproofing panel

Knee bolster, tightening torques:
M6 bolt: 8 Nm (5.8 ft.lb)
M8 bolt: 20 Nm (15 ft.lb)

Connect test resistor 998 8695 in place of bag assembly

Turn ignition switch to position II (Ignition ON). Connect battery ground cable.

Note: An ohmmeter may be used to check the resistance of special tool 998 8695.

Warning: Under no circumstance may an ohmmeter or other current generating device be used to test the resistance of the inflator module or harness continuity when the inflator module is connected.

740, 940 & 1987 760:

Test Terminal:

Clearing fault codes

Note: Do not turn ignition off between request and clearance of fault code.

Failure of the SRS warning lamp to go out after 10 seconds indicates presence of one or more fault codes due to removal of bag assembly with ignition switched on. Additional fault codes will probably be displayed if assembly was deployed in a collision. This is quite normal.

Proceed as follows:

Repeat code display procedure by grounding test terminal for 2-5 seconds.

Note: Ground lead must be fitted with spade connectors at both ends. Grounding action must be firm and must not be too brief.

Warning lamp will be extinguished for 4 seconds and relit for 3 seconds to confirm clearance of fault code(s). Final extinction of lamp indicates restoration of normal function.

If lamp does not go out

Uncorrected fault is still present. Repeat display procedure, correct fault and repeat clearance procedure.

Switch off ignition and disconnect battery ground lead

Remove test resistor 998 8695

Install bag assembly

Rest bottom of assembly on steering wheel (1). Reconnect connector (2). Place assembly in position and retighten Torx bolts from rear (3). Tightening torque: 8 Nm (5.8 ft.lb).

Note: Tighten right-hand screw first. Ensure that lead is clear and is not pinched.

Check operation

Check that steering wheel turns easily and that steering wheel lock operates correctly. Double-check that bag assembly is mounted securely.

Turn ignition key to position II (ignition ON) and reconnect battery ground lead

Check that warning lamp goes out

If not, fault is present in system. Correct fault(s) as required and clear fault code(s).
