Removal/Installation, Complete Rear Axle Assembly

REMOVAL





1. Raise car
Position front lifting arms as far forward as possible. Position rear lifting arms so as to avoid obstructing support arms.

2. Remove, on both sides:
- wheel
- support arm guard
- bolts holding support arms at front and rear.





3. Tap out rear end of support arms from wheel bearing housings

4. Place unit hoist and fixture 5972 in position
Lock support arms with fixture arms.





5. Remove bolts in upper damper mountings
Relieve dampers slightly and withdraw bolts.
Lower support arms complete with springs and dampers.





6. Remove caliper retaining bolts. Tie up calipers with wire.





7. Remove bolts securing propeller shaft to drive flange
Punch components to mark position of propeller shaft flange in relation to final drive flange.





8. Place unit hoist and fixture 5972 in position
Remove bolts (four) securing rear axle member to floor. Lower rear axle slightly.
Disconnect speedometer cable from final drive inspection cover and remove screws securing cable to rear axle member.
Separate hand brake cable.

9. Lower rear axle

INSTALLATION





10. Reinstall rear axle in reverse order
Torque:
- Rear axle member to floor, front and rear: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 60 degrees.
- Damper, upper mounting: 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.)
- Support arm, front, nut: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 90 degrees.
- Support arm, rear, in wheel bearing housing: 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 90 degrees.

11. Use new bolts and install brake calipers. Tighten to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).

12. Refit wheels Tighten nuts to 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
