This bulletin deals with replacement of the Motronic 1.8 control unit in early MN 1992 versions of the 960.

Vehicles which have already been updated at the port or factory are identified by a white label bearing the text MO 92 on the inside of the fuel filler door. Some vehicles have been updated in dealer stock and should have a yellow paint dot on the inside of the fuel filler door. Check if either label or yellow paint dot is present before commencing work.


Part numbers for updated Motronic 1.8 control units in the affected chassis number ranges are as follows:

49 state and Canadian cars (non-EGR):
9135010-8
50 state cars (EGR):
9135009-0

If either of the above control units are already installed, do not replace them.


Location of components





Control unit (Motronic 1.8) Inside panel on driver's side.


Check diagnostic system before switching OFF ignition to ensure that NO fault codes are present prior to replacing the control unit.


Control unit must be deenergized when connecting and disconnecting the connector; otherwise the control unit may be damaged.





Switch off ignition.

Remove fuse 24 to avoid damage to the control unit when disconnecting and reconnecting the unit.


Remove soundproofing panel on left hand side.


Unscrew the screw that holds the control unit. Take down the control unit.

Disconnect the connector. Replace the control unit.





Grease terminals

Press grease into terminal sleeves 10, 27, 28, and 48 (located in mid-section of connector). Entry of grease into adjoining sleeves is of no consequence.

Use grease p/n 1161417-9.


Connect the connector. Install the control unit in the car and mount the screw.

Mount the soundproofing panel.





Reinstall fuse 24.

Start engine. Test drive the car after this and any related work, and check diagnostic system to ensure that no fault codes are present.
