DTC 5-1-3

5-1-3 TEMPERATURE WARNING, LEVEL 2

Condition(s) for DTC
^ In addition to Ignition System DTC 4-3-2, DTC 5-1-3 is also recorded if the temperature in the control module box exceeds 105°C (220°F) for 18 seconds.

Substitute value
^ None.

Fault source(s)
^ Engine cooling fan not running.
^ Control module box cooling fan not running.
^ Air Cleaner or air supply blocked.

Fault symptom(s)
^ None.

TESTING PROCEDURE

Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 3
^ Activate DI DTM 3.

If engine cooling fan operates:
- Check air supply.
If engine cooling fan does not operate:
- Check fan for defect.

Checking air supply
^ Check that hoses and filter for air supply to control module box are installed, are not blocked and are connected correctly.

If filter and hoses are intact:
- Check control module box cooling fan.
If filter and hoses are faulty:
- Clean or replace defective components.

Checking control module box cooling fan

If fan is installed:
- Activate diagnostic test mode (DTM) 3.
If fan is not installed:
- Proceed to: INSTALLATION OF ECM BOX COOLING FAN Section below.

Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) 3
^ Activate DI DTM 3
^ Check that fan operates simultaneously with main engine cooling fan and is supplying air to the control module box.

If fan is operating:
- Intermittent fault.
- Proceed to: INTERMITTENT FAULT Section below.
If fan is not operating:
- Check power supply.

Checking power supply
^ Switch OFF ignition.
^ Disconnect control module box cooling fan.
^ Connect voltmeter between fan connector terminal 2 and ground.

Instrument should indicate battery voltage.

If reading is correct:
- Check resistance of signal lead.
If reading is incorrect:
- Check lead between battery positive terminal and fan terminal 2 for open-circuit.

Checking resistance of signal lead
^ Disconnect fan.
^ Connect test box to DI system and check ground terminals.
^ Connect ohmmeter between ICM A28 and fan connector terminal 1.

Instrument should indicate approx. 0 Ohms.

If reading is correct:
- Try with new fan.
If reading is incorrect:
- Check lead between ICM A28 and fan connector terminal 1 for open-circuit.

INSTALLATION OF ECM BOX COOLING FAN

^ Cars with chassis Nos. from 30700 on are prewired for installation of the fan.
^ All North American cars have the control module fan installed.

Preparations
^ Remove/disconnect:
DLC and bracket
battery ground lead
washer reservoir tube
control module box cover
control modules
upper half of control module box
air connection to ECM box

Installation of fan
^ Install and connect fan.
^ Reinstall components in reverse order.
^ Check operation of fan in DTM 3.

Diagnostic Test Mode 3
^ Activate DTM 3 DI.
^ Check that control module box cooling fan operates simultaneously with engine cooling fan.

INTERMITTENT FAULT

Checking wiring and connections
^ Check fan and ICM connectors for loose connections, and for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Check lead between ICM A28 and fan connector terminal 1 for intermittent open-circuit.
^ Check lead between battery positive terminal and fan connector terminal 2 for intermittent open-circuit.
