Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints: Service and Repair
X. Drive shaft seal left/right, replacement
Special tools: 999 1801, 5462, 5478, 951 2050
Replace/repair drive shafts:

Remove front wheels
Detach:
- Bracket for brake hose and ABS cable. Let bracket hang loose.
- Link from anti-roll bar
- Link/ball joint from stub axle (both sides). Install protective sleeves 9995562 on ball joints.

Left side:
Detach drive shaft from transmission
Use disconnecting tool 9995462 between the transmission and the inside of drive shaft joint.
Fold out spring strut and remove drive shaft from transmission.
Let drive shaft end rest on sub-frame.

Right side:
Remove:
- Splashguard from beneath engine
- Bearing cap for drive shaft support bearings
Detach drive shaft
Press on the inner portion of shaft and at the same time fold out the spring strut. Let drive shaft end rest on hose to steering gear.

Remove the seal ring
Use a crowbar.

Install new seal ring
Apply a small amount of grease to sealing lip.
Use drift 9995541 and handle 9991801.
NOTE: Do not use the old type of drift (9995478).
Left side:
Place the side of the drift marked AW against the seal ring.
Right side:
Place the side of the drift marked AW against the seal ring turned as shown in the picture to the right.
Carefully tap in the seal ring until the drift is up against the transmission housing.

Install right drive shaft
NOTE: Make sure that the seal rings in the transmission and the boot on the drive shaft are not damaged.
Replace bearing cap.
Torque: 25 Nm (19ft.lbs)

Install left drive shaft.
Ensure that the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) sensor pulse wheel is free from dirt.
Press the drive shaft in firmly so that it locks on to the differential gear. Ensure that the drive shaft lock ring sits in its locking groove. Check by pulling carefully on the drive shaft CV housing.
NOTE: Make sure that the seal rings in the transmission and the boot on the drive shaft are not damaged.

Reinstall:
- Link/ball joint to stub axle. Remove sleeve 9995562 from the ball joint. Use new nuts on the screws. Torque: 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs)
- Link to anti-roll bar. Use a new nut. Torque: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs)
- Brake hose bracket.

Reinstall on both sides:
- Wheels. Lubricate the hub center location dowel for the rim with rust inhibitor 1161030-0. Tighten the studs lightly. Then torque diagonally.
Torque: 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs).

Check transmission oil level.
