Gasket/Seals M47, Replacement





1. Expose the rear of the gearbox
- Drain the oil.
- Disconnect the propeller shaft.
- Remove the coupling flange.
- Place the hoist with fixture P/N 5972 under the gearbox.
- Remove the gearbox cross-member.
- Brush clean around the gaskets.
- Release the gear lever carrier and gearshift rod from the gearbox.
- Slacken the exhaust pipe joint.
- Lower the rear end of the gearbox.





2. Remove the rear cover. Remove the seal for the output shaft.

NOTE:
- If only the gasket for the rear cover is to be replaced, continue with operation in step 9.
- If the gasket between the 5th case and the gear-case is also to be replaced, continue with the next operation below.





3. Remove the bolt and washer for the layshaft.





NOTE: Grind down the jaws of the puller as shown in the figure.

4. Withdraw the 5th-gear case. Use puller P/N 998 7693.
- Use the bolt as support.
- Remove the gasket.
5. Remove the shaft seal in the 5th-gear case. Use a screwdriver.





6. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
7. Grease the joint face of the gear-case. Fit the gasket onto the gear-case.
8. Grease and fit the shaft seal into the 5th-gear case. Use a suitable sleeve.





9. Fit the 5th-gear case. Press in the rear bearing of the layshaft. First tap the bearing in by a small amount, using a plastic mallet. Then fit the shims, washer and a new self-locking bolt, or use locking compound 1 161 053-2. Engage a gear and tighten the bolt to a torque of 35-45 Nm (25-33 ft lb).





10. Clean and inspect all seal surfaces.
11. Fit the seals into the end cover:
- Grease and fit the seal. Use drift P/N 5064.
- The seal should be 2.5 mm (0.1 in) below the face of the flange.
- Check that the vent hole is open.
12. Grease the joint face on the 5th-gear case. Fit the gasket.





13. Fit the rear cover, gearshift rod, gear lever carrier and gearbox cross-member with mounting. Tighten to a torque of 35-50 Nm (25-36 ft lb).
14. Raise the gearbox and fit the gearbox cross-member. Remove the hoist.
15. Tighten the exhaust pipe joint.
16. Fit the coupling flange. Tighten to a torque of 90-110 Nm (65-80 ft lb). Use tool P/N 5149 to prevent the coupling flange from rotating.





17. Fit the propeller shaft.
18. Fill with 1.3 liters (1.4 qt) of oil.
19. Check the operation.
