Removal/Installation, Final Drive Only
1. Jack up car.
Position front lifting arms as far forward as possible. Position rear lifting arms so as to avoid obstructing support arms.
2. Remove wheels.
3. Remove:
- bolts securing support arm to wheel bearing housing. Tap out support arm.
NOTE: One side only.
- bolt and nut securing lower link to wheel bearing housing.
4. Remove bolt securing track rod to wheel bearing housing
5. Withdraw track rod from wheel bearing housing
Use small claw-type puller and 50 mm M12 bolt.
6. Remove bolts securing upper and lower sections of rear axle member.
7. Swing aside wheel bearing housing and remove lower section of rear axle member
Leave track rods and links attached to member.
8. Remove bolts securing propeller shaft to drive flange. Punch components to mark position of propeller shaft in relation to final drive flange.
Tool No. 999 5972. Fixture For Transmission Jack:
9. Place unit hoist and fixture 5972 in position.
10. Remove bolts (three) securing final drive to rear axle member
11. Lower final drive slightly
12. Remove:
- pick-up lead
- drive (axle) shaft retaining bolts. Lower final drive.
13. Lift final drive and reconnect pick-up lead Tighten screw to 12 Nm (6-9 ft. lbs.).
14. Lift final drive into position Tighten bolts (three) securing final drive to rear axle member. Tighten to 160 Nm (118 ft. lbs.).
15. Install:
- drive (axle) shaft assembly bolts
- bolts securing drive (axle) shaft to final drive flange.
- Note: Previous marking
- Torques:
drive (axle) shaft bolts: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 90 degrees.
Propeller shaft bolts: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
16. Raise lower section of rear axle member
17. Insert but do not tighten bolts securing upper and lower sections of rear axle member
18. Insert two M12 bolts or two 12 mm drifts in centering holes in rear axle member
NOTE: This is essential to ensure that wheel alignment is correct after assembly.
19. Tighten bolts between upper and lower sections of rear axle member
Tighten to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 30 degrees.
20. Insert bolt securing lower link to wheel bearing housing.
21. Pull wheel bearing housing inwards towards final drive. This is to ensure that rear wheel alignment is correct.
22. Tighten link nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 90 degrees.
23. Install:
- support arm. Tighten to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.) + angle tighten through 90 degrees.
- track rod. Tighten to 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
24. Refit wheels and tighten nuts to 85 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
25. Check and top up final drive oil level as required
