Transmission Replace

1. Disconnect negative battery ground cable.
2. Attach lifting lug tool No. 5429 or equivalent, and lifting yoke tool No. 5428 or equivalent to engine.
3. Place support rails tool No. 5053 or equivalent on wing edges of fenders and attach lifting beam tool No. 5115 or equivalent to relieve weight from transmission bracket.
4. Remove splash guard from under engine, air preheater pipe, then lateral strut.
5. Disconnect electrical connectors from oxygen sensor, starter motor, then open clips on transmission and remove two clips on transmission support member.
6. Remove three connectors from bracket on torque converter housing.
7. Remove front exhaust pipe, disconnect propeller shaft from transmission using socket tool No. 5244 or equivalent. Disconnect control rod and reaction arm from gear selector mechanism by removing circlips and washers.
8. Remove heat shield, then disconnect fluid lines from transmission. Plug pipe end to prevent contamination of fluid.
9. Remove transmission support member, then lower rear of engine as far as possible. Ensure no electrical wires or hoses are trapped between engine and bulkhead.
10. Remove torque converter bolts, then place suitable lift under transmission.
11. Remove transmission to engine mounting bolts, push transmission backwards while holding torque converter in place, then lower unit from vehicle.
12. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Ensure carrier plate is not cracked or warped.
b. Ensure torque converter is properly positioned by placing a straightedge across converter housing and measure distance between converter mounting lug. Distance should be approximately 0.55 inch.
c. Torque converter housing bolts to 35 ft. lbs., and the two starter mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs.
d. When tightening converter bolts, tighten until head of bolts are against carrier plate, then torque to 22 ft. lbs.
e. Torque propeller shaft attaching bolts to 37 ft. lbs.
f. Clear diagnostic codes.
