Replacing passenger airbag cover 850 1993-

This Service Bulletin replaces earlier SB 88-821 dated January 1997, which should be discarded.

Replacing passenger airbag cover

Background:
The passenger side airbag cover is now available as a replacement part. This Service Bulletin covers replacing the passenger side airbag cover.

Materials:

Service kits (passenger airbag cover):

272321-1 Gray
272323-7 Beige

Other components required:

Rapid bonding adhesive 1161434-4
Cleaner H 1161436-9
Anti-squeak varnish 1161412-0

Method:





- Disconnect battery negative terminal.

- Remove the airbag module from the dashboard according to Service Manual.

Remove the two screw clips.





Drill out the two pop rivets from the bottom edge of the dashboard.

Use a 3 mm (1/8") drill bit.





Remove the felt tape covering 4 pop rivets on the reverse of the metal rail.





Drill out the 4 pop rivets on the reverse of the rail with an angle drill.

Use a 3 mm (1/8") drill bit.





Remove the 3 front nuts holding the cover.





Cut off the spring clips holding the cover retaining straps and lift off the retaining straps.





Detach the cover by pushing it forward.

Warning!
The use of protective equipment such as safety goggles is recommended.

Clean residue from dashboard using compressed air.





Transfer the metal rail to the new cover with studs.





Paint all mating surfaces between the dashboard and cover with anti-squeak varnish, P/N 1161412-0.





Install the new cover in the dashboard.

Apply the three nuts. Do not tighten them.

Install a pop rivet in one of the outer mountings as a guide. Do not close the rivet yet.





Install a rivet in the outer mounting and close it.

Close the guide rivet.

Close both the middle rivets

Install new felt tape over the pop rivets.

Tighten nuts. Torque 3 Nm (26.5 in.lbs).





Position the retaining straps and install the new clips.





Remove the backing foil from the double-sided tape mounted on the cover.

Press the retaining straps against tape.





The outer lower section of the cover upholstery, which was previously riveted, is glued when reinstalling.

Clean the areas to be glued with cleaner H, P/N 1161436-9.

Bond with adhesive, P/N 1161434-4, from the outer edge and approximately 25 mm (1") inwards.





Install the screw clips.

Install the airbag module according to the Service Manual.

Connect battery negative terminal.
