Steering: Description and Operation
The main components of the power-assisted steering system are the steering gear and power steering pump. The steering gear is of the rack and pinion type, and is grease-lubricated. The vane-type power steering pump is driven by belt from the engine crankshaft. The oil reservoir is integral with the pump. The system arrangement is illustrated above. The movements of the steering wheel are transferred to the road wheels through the steering shaft (1), steering gear (2), tie rods (track rods) (3) and steering arms (4). A wheel lock limiter is installed close to each front wheel to optimize the turning circle while preventing contact between the wheels and wheel housings. This, in turn, means that the turning circle is only 10.4 meters (41.4 inch). The number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock is 3.2.
