Changes to electrical equipment in the 850

Changes to electrical equipment on the 850 model year 1997.

AA1

Atmospheric pressure sensor

P/N 1275342-2 for engine B5254T.

A new sensor P/N 1275342-2 for the engine control module (ECM) has been introduced.

The sensor measures the atmospheric pressure and affects the boost pressure control signal.

The sensor is located in the engine compartment by the right hood lock.

Replacing sensor:

- Disconnect connector.

- Remove screw holding sensor.

Replace sensor.

Press grease P/N 1161417-9 into connector.

Reinstall in reverse order

AA2

Outside temperature sensor for engine
B5254T USA/CDN.

Another new sensor P/N 1347010-9 for the engine control module (ECM) has been introduced. The sensor measures the outside temperature and affects the engine control module (ECM) so that certain functions are changed at low temperatures.

The sensor is located under the front bumper on the same bracket as the existing temperature sensor for the outside temperature gauge in the combined instrument panel.

The 2 temperature sensors have different colored connectors.

The engine control module (ECM) sensor connector is blue.

Replacing sensor:

- Pull sensor out of the hole in the bracket.

- Disconnect connector.

Replace sensor and reinstall in reverse order.

Press grease P/N 1161417-9 into connector.

AA3

New location of ground terminal.

The two engine management system ground terminals have been moved to a common ground terminal located on the top of the right side member.

Remember to check that ground terminals are properly tightened and not corroded.

AA4

A new combined instrument panel 9148937-7 has been introduced for the 850 AWD.

A new combined instrument panel 9148937-7 has been introduced for the 850 AWD.

This instrument is modified for 16" wheel rims and will be used until further notice.

No mechanical or size changes have been made.

AA5

knock sensor (KS) connectors and wiring. 20-valve engines.

Knock sensor (KS) wiring has been modified. A common connector for both sensors is connected to a connector on the cable duct in front of the engine.

The method for removing and installing knock sensors (KS) is generally the same. See Service Manual Section 2(23, 28), Engine management system Motronic 4.4 850 (B5254T) 1997-.

Press grease into connector, P/N: 1161417-9.

AA6

ABS wiring rear axle 850 AWD, location on rear axle.

The ABS sensors and wiring have been modified for the new rear axle. Both sensors are connected to a connector located above the rear axle on the right of the luggage compartment.

Method for removing ABS sensors:

- Expose luggage compartment floor.

- Disconnect the yellow connector and remove hatch to expose wiring lead-in in luggage compartment.

Raise the car on a lift and remove:

- tie strap at the rear of the fuel filter bracket.

- clip mounted in rear axle member.

- plastic guard along track rod.

Unscrew ABS sensors.

AA7

Replacing ABS sensors and securing wiring.

It is important to position and secure ABS sensor wiring correctly.

Installing ABS sensors:

Screw sensors into place. Ensure that mating surfaces are clean. Install:

- plastic guard with cable along track rod. There should be 20-25 mm (3/4" - 1") free for the cable between the end of the plastic guard and the brake shield. Angle the plastic guard with cable forward and up at approx. 45°

- 4 clips on the rear axle member. Yellow markings on cable.

- tie strap located on rear of fuel filter bracket

Route the cable and connector through the hole.

Check for security and lower the car.

Connect connector and screw hatch into place with the cable lead-in correctly positioned.

The yellow tape marking the cable position at the cable lead-in should be above the hatch.
Reinstall components in luggage compartment.

Connect diagnostic equipment and check ABS sensors.
