Checking Signal From the Transmission Control Module

Checking signal from AW 3O-40/43
- Start the engine and idle it.
- Go into scrolling values.
- Move the gear selector to position N and note the gear position displayed by the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Move the gear selector to position D and note the gear position displayed by the Volvo Scan Tool.





- Compare the values in the table to continue fault-tracing.
- Select a suitable alternative.

Alternative 1:
^ Proceed to: Checking the Idle Air Control Valve Connector section below.

Alternative 2:
^ Proceed to: Checking Signal Cable, Continuously in P or N section below.

Alternative 3:
^ Proceed to: Checking Signal Cable, Continuously in R/D/3/L section below.

Checking the Idle Air Control Valve Connector
- Clean and grease engine control module (ECM) and idle air control (IAC) valve connectors.
- Check whether the engine speed still dips.
- Do the fault symptoms persist?

Yes:
^ Try a new idle air control valve.

No:
^ Operation done.





Checking Signal Cable, Continuously in P or N
- Ignition OFF.
- Wait approx. 150 seconds.
- Disconnect transmission control module (TCM).
- Connect breakout box to AW 30-40/43 transmission control module wiring.
- Ignition ON.
- Connect a voltmeter between # 1 and # 11 on the break-out box.
- The value should be 7 - 9 Volts.

If reading is OK:
^ Check signal from gear selector to transmission control module.

If value is higher:
^ Check cable between Motronic engine control module # B24 and transmission control module # 11 for a short-circuit to supply voltage.

If value is lower:
^ Check cable between Motronic engine control module # B24 and transmission control module # 11 for an open-circuit.





Checking Signal Cable, Continuously in R/D/3/L
- Ignition OFF.
- Wait approx. 150 seconds.
- Disconnect transmission control module.
- Connect breakout box to AW 30-4O/43 transmission control module wiring.
- Ignition ON.
- Connect a voltmeter between # 1 and # 11 on the breakout box.
- The value should be 7 - 9 Volts.

If reading is OK:
^ Check signal from gear selector to transmission control module.

If value is lower:
^ Check cable between Motronic engine control module # B24 and transmission control module # 11 for a short-circuit to ground.
