Shift Interlock: Description and Operation

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH
To prevent inadvertent movement of the gear selector lever from position P. cars in certain markets are also equipped with an electrically operated PNP switch which blocks the gear selector detent pin (1) in the latch segment and locks the mechanism in the parking position. Figure A.

To move the lever from this position, the ignition must be switched on and the brake pedal depressed.
Switching on the ignition while depressing the brake pedal activates a solenoid (2) in the gear selector unit.
The solenoid lock pin (3) is pressed in and you can then press down the lock button on the selector in the normal way to select another gear. See figure B.
