Checking Engine Cooling Fan (FC)






Checking engine cooling fan (FC)

Checking engine cooling fan (FC) speed




- Ignition off.
- Check engine cooling fan (FC) speed.
- If the engine cooling fan operates at low-speed even when the ignition is off: Select 1.
- If the engine cooling fan operates at high-speed even when the ignition is off: Select 2.
- If neither of the above symptoms apply: Select 3.





Select a suitable alternative.

1 - Checking engine cooling fan (FC) half speed

3 - Checking engine cooling fan (FC) low-speed

- Ignition on.




- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to check engine cooling fan (FC) speed at low-speed.

- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to check engine cooling fan (FC) speed at high-speed.
The following options are available:
1. The engine cooling fan (FC) works at both speeds.
2. The engine cooling fan (FC) only works at low-speed.
3. The engine cooling fan (FC) only works at high-speed.
4. The engine cooling fan (FC) does not work.





Select a suitable alternative.

Checking signal cable, high-speed












- Disconnect connector B from the engine cooling fan (FC) relay.
- Breakout box connected.








- Connect an ohmmeter between connector B terminal 2 and #22 (#A22) on the breakout box.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - Checking engine cooling fan (FC) motor, high-speed

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- check cable between engine cooling fan (FC) relay terminal B2 and engine control module (ECM) #A22 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect connector C from the engine cooling fan (FC) relay.








- Connect an ohmmeter between connector C terminal 2 and ground.

The ohmmeter should read 0 - 10 ohms.

OK - Replacing component

Checking the blower fan motor, low-speed side








- Ignition off.
- Disconnect connector C from the engine cooling fan (FC) relay.








- Connect an ohmmeter between connector C terminal 1 and ground.

The ohmmeter should read 0 - 10 ohms.

OK - Replacing component

Not OK - Replacing component

Checking ground lead








- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the 1-pin ground lead connector (C/EA).




- Connect an ohmmeter between the 1-pin connector (bodywork side) and ground.

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

OK - Checking the engine cooling fan (FC) motor

Not OK - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation

- Check ground terminal for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and the cable between the engine cooling fan (FC) motor and ground for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Does the engine cooling fan (FC) cut out?

Yes - Checking for a short-circuit to ground

No - Replacing component

- check cable between engine cooling fan (FC) relay terminal B1 and engine control module (ECM) #A7 for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Yes - No Fault Found

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect control module.

Note! The engine control module (ECM) must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds (cars with an immobilizer 245 seconds) after the ignition has been switched off.

Connect adapter 951 1351 ADAPTOR 86-PIN 951 1351 Adaptor 86-Pin to engine control module (ECM) connector and connect breakout box 981 3190 Replaced by 9511428 981 3190 Replaced by 951 1428 to adapter.

- Ignition off.
- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).
Connect an ohmmeter between battery negative terminal and:
- #13 (#A13) on the breakout box.
- #28 (#A28) on the breakout box.
- #42 (#A42) on the breakout box.









The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms for all readings.

OK - Reading is OK

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Check ground lead between engine and chassis for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals.
