Disassembling power steering pump
Hint: Removing power steering pump see Replacing power steering pump Removal and Replacement. To install see Replacing power steering pump Removal and Replacement.
Remove fluid reservoir from pump
Use a screwdriver and a pipe wrench.
Lift the locking tags on the holder and press off the holders with the wrench.
Remove the O-ring between the pump and reservoir.
Remove pulley from pump
Use puller 999 5443 999 5443.
Remove control valve from pump housing
Remove connecting nut, control valve, spring and O-ring from the nut.
Remove:
- pump shaft with bearing from the pump housing.
- snap ring. Pull shaft with bearing from housing.
Use press tool 999 5444 PRESS TOOL 999 5444 Press Tool to obtain better grip on the shaft.
Note! Following two paragraphs only apply when replacing bearings.
Measure bearing position on shaft
Note dimension
Note! The new dimension should have the same position on the shaft at installation (See Install the bearing on the shaft).
Press bearing from shaft
If only replacing bearing, continue to paragraph Assembling power steering pump.
Remove shaft sealing ring
Use a screwdriver. Take care not to damage pump housing.
If only replacing seal continue to paragraph " In the pump housing, install:" in Assembling power steering pump.
Note! Mark the end in relation to the pump housing with a scribed line
Remove end snap ring
Press out snap ring through the hole in the pump housing with a drift. Remove snap ring with a screwdriver.
Remove end from the pump housing
Install pump horizontally. This must be done so that the rotor does not fall down when the pump housing end is removed.
Use drift 999 5515 PUNCH 999 5515 Punch. Knock the pressure plate center guide, enough to free the end from the pump housing. Remove end from the housing.
Carefully turn the pump up so that the rotor falling out.
Remove:
- O-ring from pump housing
- guide pin for pump ring
- pump ring
- rotor with blades
- pressure plate
- O-ring from pressure plate
- locating pins for pressure plate
- spring
- O-ring from the holder in the pump housing.
The paragraph Knock out the O-ring holder out of the house applies only if the holder for the O-ring in the pump housing needs replacing.
Knock out the O-ring holder out of the house
Use drift 999 5515 PUNCH 999 5515 Punch.
Clean and check all components carefully
Replace those that are worn or damaged.
Caution! Lubricate all the new components such as the machined pump housing surfaces before they are installed, use ATF oil.
Note! O-rings/seals should always be replaced. Lubricate when installing.
Assembling power steering pump
Install the bearing on the shaft
Support the bearing inner ring with shaft 999 5184 PUNCH 999 5184 Punch. Press the shaft into place on the bearing. Ensure that the bearing mounting position is previously measured. (See paragraph Measure bearing position on shaft).
The paragraph Install holder for O-ring applies only if replacing the O-ring holder in the pump housing.
Install holder for O-ring
Remove O-ring if it was previously installed in the holder.
Lubricate holder and carefully tap it into the holder seat. Use drift 999 5515 PUNCH 999 5515 Punch.
Install in the pump housing:
- O-ring in holder
- sealing ring in pump housing. Use drift 999 5515 PUNCH 999 5515 Punch. Knock the seal into the seat in the housing.
Install pressure plate in pump housing
Install guide pin and spring in the housing.
Install a new O-ring on the pressure plate.
Align one of the two guide pin cutouts in the plate with the pin.
Press in pressure plate into housing. Use drift 999 5515 PUNCH 999 5515 Punch.
Install:
- two pump ring locating pins
- the pump ring with the three markings upwards
- the rotor.
Note! Turn the rotor downwards so that the machined out section at the splines faces forward towards the pulley (see illustration)
- rotor vanes
- end piece O-ring in pump housing.
Install the end piece in the pump housing
Note! Be careful to align the scored lines to each other, see illustration.
Press in the end piece in the pump housing, install the locking ring.
Install the pump shaft with bearing
Insert the shaft in the pump housing until the bearing is seated.
Position the ring with the rounded side upwards against the pulley.
Install control valve
- O-ring on the terminal nut
- spring
- control valve
- terminal nut. Tighten to 75 Nm .
Install pulley
Lubricate pump shaft first. Then press on the pulley. Use press tool 999 5444 PRESS TOOL 999 5444 Press Tool. Press until the nut is against the shaft end.
Install the fluid reservoir
Install:
- O-ring on reservoir pipe sleeve.
- fluid reservoir to pump with holders. Ensure that the holder lugs go into position. See also under paragraph Remove fluid reservoir from pump.
