Transmission, drive shaft seal replacement
Special tools:
999 1801 STANDARD SHAFT 999 1801 Standard Shaft
999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool
999 5541 PUNCH 999 5541 Punch
Note! The procedure is the same for both sides unless stated otherwise.
Removing front wheel
Disconnect brake pipe and ABS lead bracket.
- Let bracket hang free.
Disconnect link arm from anti-roll bar.
Remove nuts holding link arm/ball joint and unhook link arm from ball joint.
Caution! Take care not to damage ball joint bellows (gaiter)!
LH side:
- Remove driveshaft from transmission. Use jimmy bar 999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool between transmission and inside of drive shaft.
Rest driveshaft end on subframe.
- Let end of the drive shaft rest against sub-frame.
RH side:
Remove splashguard under engine. (Earlier models only.)
Remove driveshaft support bearing cover.
Pull out driveshaft innards, bending McPherson strut back
- Let driveshaft end rest on pipe running to steering gear.
Remove driveshaft seal
- Use a lever.
Install new driveshaft seal
- Apply a small amount of grease to sealing lip.
- Use drift 999 5541 PUNCH 999 5541 Punch and handle 999 1801 STANDARD SHAFT 999 1801 Standard Shaft.
Note! Do not use the older type of drift 999 5478.
LH side:
- Put the side of the drift marked 'M56' against the driveshaft seal.
RH side:
- Put the side of the drift marked 'M56' against the driveshaft seal, and turn as shown in picture on right.
Tap driveshaft seal in gently until drift is touching transmission casing.
Installing driveshafts
Caution! Take care not to damage driveshaft seals or boot (gaiter).
Right drive shaft
- Replace bearing cap. Tighten to 25 Nm .
- Reinstall splashguard under engine. Splashguard under engine (earlier models).
Left drive shaft
Push driveshaft in correctly so its circlip engages with [1][2]differential slot. Ensure that the drive shaft circlip is correctly located in its groove. Check by carefully pulling on the drive shaft inner joint.
Install:
- Suspension arm to ball joint. Use new nuts.
Note! Check that ball-joint seating in suspension arm is clean and free of grease.
Tighten nuts from inside and out to 18 Nm +120°. , use a protractor 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor.
Apply rustproofing agent to area between ball joint, suspension arm and nuts correctly and precisely. Use rust inhibitor 1161432-8.
- Link to anti-roll bar with new nut and tighten to 50 Nm .
Install:
- Bracket for brake pipe and ABS cable.
Check and top up oil in transmission as required.
- Tighten to 35 Nm .
Install:
- Wheel. Ensure that the brake disk and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean. Grease hub center locating pin in front of pad using rustproofing agent 1161405-4. Fit bolts but do not tighten. Install bolts hand tight, then tighten diagonally to 110 Nm . When tightening with socket wrench, use torque sleeve 1158147-7.
