Status message

Note! To obtain the correct status message:




- Ignition on.




- Set mode selector to E.
- Wait approx. 30 seconds.
- Set mode selector to S.
- Wait approx. 30 seconds.
- Read off the status of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).





Is the status PERMANENT FAULT displayed?

Yes - Checking mode selector connection

No - Intermittent fault

- Ignition off.
- Remove the mode selector.
- Check that the mode selector is correctly connected.





Is the mode selector correctly connected?

Yes - Checking ground lead

No - Checking component

- Connect mode selector.
The cause of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been that the mode selector was not connected.

Continue - Verification

Checking ground lead








- Ignition off.
- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).
- Disconnect the mode selector.
Connect an ohmmeter between mode selector connector terminal 5 and ground.









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Checking for a short-circuit to supply in signal wiring

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation

- Ignition off.
Check ground terminal 31/15 and cable between mode selector connector terminal 5 and ground terminal 31/15 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault , and contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.









Continue - Verification

Checking for a short-circuit to supply in signal wiring








- Ignition off.
- Mode selector disconnected.
- Ignition on.
Connect an electrician's screwdriver (minimum 3 W bulb) between the mode selector connector terminal:
- 5 and 3 (MS1)
- 5 and 2 (MS2)









Does the bulb light?

Yes - Checking for a short-circuit

No - Checking signal cables

- Ignition on.
Check the cables between mode selector connector terminal 3 and transmission control module (TCM) #B17 and terminal x and control module #B16 for short-circuit to supply according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.









Continue - Checking mode selector function

Checking signal cables








- Ignition off.
- Mode selector disconnected.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between mode selector connector terminal:
- 5 and 3 (MS1)
- 5 and 2 (MS2)









The voltmeter should read approx. 0-2 V below battery voltage.

OK - Checking mode selector resistance

Not OK - Checking the transmission control module (TCM) connector

- Ignition off.
- Check control module connector and connectors 24/2E and 24/7 for contact resistance and oxidation and remedy according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault
- Control module connected.
- Mode selector disconnected.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between mode selector connector terminal:
- 5 and 3 (MS1)
- 5 and 2 (MS2)









The voltmeter should read approx. 0-2V below battery voltage.

OK - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition on.
Check cables between mode selector terminal 2 and control module #B16 and terminal 3 and control module #B17 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.









Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Checking mode selector resistance








- Ignition off.
- Mode selector disconnected.
Connect an ohmmeter between mode selector connector terminal:
- 3 and 5 with the mode selector in position S
- 2 and 5 with the mode selector in position E









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation

Not OK - Replacing component

- Ignition off.
- Mode selector disconnected.
The cause of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been loose connections in the mode selector connector. Check mode selector connector for loose connections and remedy according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults , and contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.





Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Try a new mode selector.

Checking mode selector function

Hint: The mode selector can malfunction if there has been a short-circuit to supply voltage in its signal cable. Check the mode selector as follows:








- Ignition off.
- Mode selector disconnected.
Connect an ohmmeter between mode selector connector terminal:
- 3 and 5 with the mode selector in position S
- 2 and 5 with the mode selector in position E









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - FAULT FOUND

Not OK - Replacing component

Verification

Hint: After repairs have been completed they must be verified as follows to ensure that the fault has been eliminated:








- Ignition off.
- Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc.
- Ignition on.
- Go into scrolling values.
- Read off the mode selector position.
Check positions E, S and W.

Yes - VERIFIED

No - VERIFICATION FAILED

- Check the cable between the mode selector connector terminal 5 and ground point 31/15 for intermittent open circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
