Signal missing (Continued)

Verification

Hint: After repair, it is necessary to check that the fault has been corrected as described below.












- Switch off ignition
- Reconnect connectors.
- Switch off all power consumers, such as interior lighting and radio.




- Use ohmmeter to measure resistance
- between #A20 (A20) on test box and battery negative terminal, and
- between #A29 (A29) on test box and battery negative terminal.

Instrument should indicate approx. 0 ohms in both cases.

OK - FAULT FOUND

- Switch off ignition.
- Disconnect ECM.

Note! The ECM must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted the supply. This may take up to 150 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.

- Plug adapter 951 1351 ADAPTOR 86-PIN 951 1351 Adaptor 86-Pin into ECM base and connect break-out box 981 3190 Replaced by 9511428 981 3190 Replaced by 951 1428 to adapter.





Press Continue.

Continue - Resume fault tracing at point of interruption.

- Reconnect ECM.








- Use ohmmeter to measure resistance between #28 (#B28) on break-out box and battery negative terminal.

Instrument should indicate approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Resume fault tracing at point of interruption.
No Fault Found

Not OK - Check ground terminals 31/32 and 31/33 at rear of engine and associated wiring for open-circuit as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault , and for contact resistance and oxidation as per Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Note! The engine control module (ECM) must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds (cars with an immobilizer 245 seconds) after the ignition has been switched off.

- Ignition off.
- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).
Connect an ohmmeter between battery negative terminal and:
- #13 (#A13) on the breakout box.
- #28 (#A28) on the breakout box.
- #42 (#A42) on the breakout box.









The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms for all readings.

OK - Reading is OK

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

- Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Activate TC1/TC2. The voltmeter reading should oscillate between:
EZ129K: approx. 0 V and 5 V
Fenix 5.2, Motronic 4.3/4.4: approx. 0 V and 0-2 under battery voltage.
Oscillation is rapid, approx. 1 second.

Does the reading oscillate?

Yes - Checking transmission control module (TCM) signal cable

No - Checking for an open-circuit

- Ignition on.
- Move gear selector to position P.
Activate torque limiting TC1/TC2. Read off transmission control module (TCM) status.
The status should alternate between NO/YES.





Does the status alternate?

Yes - Intermittent fault

No - Checking for an open-circuit

Hint: After repairs have been completed they must be verified as follows to ensure that the fault has been eliminated:












- Ignition off.
- Reconnect connectors, reinstall components.
- Breakout box connected to engine control module (ECM).
- Control modules connected.
- Ignition on.
- Move gear selector to position P.
Connect a voltmeter between ground and breakout box terminals:
- For EZ129K:
- #32 (#B2) TC1
- #33 (#B3) TC2
- For Fenix 5.2, Motronic 4.3 or Motronic 4.4:
- #2 (#B2) TC1
- #3 (#B3) TC2
Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
Activate torque limiting TC1, TC2.
The voltmeter reading should rapidly oscillate down to approx. 0 V when the signal is activated (this oscillation is rapid, approx. 1 second).









Does the signal oscillate?

Yes - Verification, continued

No - VERIFICATION FAILED

- Ignition off.
- Reconnect connectors, reinstall components.
- Ignition on.
- Move gear selector to position P.
Activate torque limiting TC1, TC2. Read off transmission control module (TCM) torque limiting acknowledgement status.
The status should alternate between NO/YES.
