Checking gear-shift position sensor




- Ignition on.
- Select scrolling value.
- Read gear-shift position sensor position.
Move the gear selector to all shift positions a number of times, and repeatedly select the same position to check the operation of the gear-shift position sensor.





Are all values OK?

Yes - Intermittent fault

No - Checking gear-shift position sensor adjustment

- Ignition off.
Check according to Checking/adjusting gear-shift position sensor Adjustments that the gear-shift position sensor is correctly adjusted.





Is the gear-shift position sensor correctly adjusted?

Yes - Checking gear-shift position sensor ground terminal

No - Adjusting component

Note! The gear-shift position sensor is grounded via its two retaining screws and its mating surface with the transmission.




- Ignition off.
Connect an ohmmeter between gear-shift position sensor casing and transmission housing.





The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

Caution! The control module power supply must be disconnected when connecting or disconnecting the breakout box, otherwise it may be damaged.









- Ignition off
- Disconnect the transmission control module (TCM).
- Connect adapter 981 3195 ADAPTOR 981 3195 Adaptor to transmission control module (TCM) connector and connect breakout box 981 3190 Replaced by 9511428 981 3190 Replaced by 951 1428 to adapter.

Note! Ensure that the adaptor is the right way round - with the breakout box cable harness outwards towards the fender.

- Ignition off.
- Control module disconnected.
- Turn of all equipment in the car that takes power from the battery (the interior lighting and radio etc).
Connect an ohmmeter between the battery negative terminal and:
#20 (#A20) on the breakout box
#29 (#A29) on the breakout box.









The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms for all readings

OK - No Fault Found

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation

Check ground terminals 31/32 and 31/33 and cables between ground terminals and control module #A20 and #A29 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check ground lead between battery and bodywork for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault , and contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Hint: After carrying out the repair check that the fault has been remedied.
Carry out the following:








- Ignition off

Connect ohmmeter between test box #20 (#A20) and terminal:

- #6 (#A6) "PA"









The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance.

The ohmmeter should read approx.0 ohms for all readings.

- Ignition off.
- Connect transmission control module (TCM)
- Ignition on.
Connect an electrician's screwdriver (bulb at least 3 W) between test box #A20 (#A20) and:
- #3 (#A3) "A"
- #4 (#A4) "B"
- #5 (#A5) "C"
- #6 (#A6) "PA"









Did the bulb light?

Yes - Checking for short-circuit to supply voltage

No - Checking gear-shift position sensor operation

- 2 and transmission control module (TCM) #4 "B"

Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition off.
- Connect transmission connector.
- Connect transmission control module (TCM)
- Ignition on.
- Go into scrolling values.




- Read gear-shift position sensor position.
- Move the gear-shift position sensor to all shift positions a number of times, and repeatedly select the same position to check the operation of the gear-shift position sensor.

Are all values OK?

OK - Remedy contact resistance and oxidation

Not OK - Replacing component

- Ignition off.
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was caused by poor contact in the transmission control module (TCM) and transmission connectors.
Check connectors for contact resistance and oxidation and remedy in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.










Continue - Verification

Replacing component
Try a new gear-shift position sensor according to Gear-shift position sensor, replacing Gear-Shift Position Sensor, Replacing.

Hint: The gear-shift position sensor can break if the signal cable has been short-circuited to supply voltage. Check the gear position sensor as follows.












- Ignition off.
- Connect transmission connector.
- Transmission control module (TCM) connected.
- Ignition on.
- Select scrolling values.




- Read gear-shift position sensor position.
- Move the gear selector to all shift positions a number of times, and repeatedly select the same position to check the operation of the gear-shift position sensor.

Are all values OK?

Yes - FAULT FOUND

No - Replacing component

Hint: After repairs have been completed they must be verified as follows to ensure that the fault has been eliminated:




- Ignition off.
- Reinstall components, reconnect connectors etc.
- Ignition on.
- Go into scrolling value




- Read gear-shift position sensor position.
- Move the gear selector to all shift positions a number of times, and repeatedly select the same position to check the operation of the gear selector.

Are all values OK?

Yes - VERIFIED

No - VERIFICATION FAILED

- Check the cables between the gear-shift position sensor and transmission control module (TCM) for an intermittent open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults , intermittent short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults and an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals.
