Leakage. Permanent fault

EFI-315 Canister purge (CP) valve, leakage

Checking canister purge (CP) valve

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
- Disconnect canister purge (CP) valve wiring and connector.
- Pull canister purge (CP) valve out of its mounting.
- Connect vacuum pump 999 5843 VACUUM PUMP AT 999 5843 Vacuum Pump AT to canister purge (CP) valve.

Note! Make a note of the direction of flow through the canister purge (CP) valve.

Note! Check that the hose between the vacuum pump and canister purge (CP) valve is no longer than 100 mm.

Pump up a negative pressure of 400 mm Hg.
- Check that this negative pressure does not rise to atmospheric pressure within 30 seconds.

Does the negative pressure rise to atmospheric pressure within 30 seconds?

Yes - Try a new canister purge (CP) valve. Then continue with Verification.
Replacing component

No - The fault is intermittent, fault-trace according to Leakage. Intermittent fault Leakage. Intermittent Fault.
Checking line to fuel tank

-------------------------------------------------

Checking line to fuel tank
- Carefully disconnect the line from the canister purge (CP) valve on the fuel tank.
- Connect vacuum pump 999 5843 VACUUM PUMP AT 999 5843 Vacuum Pump AT to the line from the fuel tank.
- Try to pump up a vacuum. (It should not be possible to pump up a vacuum).
- 1. Fuel tank
- 2. Roll-over valve
- 3. EVAP canister
- 4. Canister purge (CP) valve
- 5. EVAP canister shut-off valve

Is it possible to pump up a vacuum?

Yes - Checking EVAP system lines

No - Fault-tracing information

- System is OK.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking EVAP system lines
- Check that the line between the EVAP canister and roll-over valve is not blocked or damaged.
- Check that the line between the roll-over valve and fuel tank is not blocked or damaged.
- 1. Fuel tank
- 2. Roll-over valve
- 3. EVAP canister
- 4. Canister purge (CP) valve

Verification

Verification

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows:

- Ignition off.
- Reinstall all hoses/components.
- Ignition on.
- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Continue - Verification, continued

------------------------

Verification, continued

- Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from the VIDA station and use it in stand-alone mode.
- Run the engine to operating temperature (above 70°C).
- Air conditioning (A/C) off.
- Gear selector in P or N
- Engine idling
- Go into diagnostic test mode menu. Activate leak diagnostic.
- Wait until the diagnostic is complete. This can take up to 2 minutes.

Note! If the texts START CONDITIONS NOT MET or DIAGNOSTIC INTERRUPTED are displayed the diagnostic cannot be carried out. This can have several causes: for example high fuel evaporation, high canister charge, high tank pressure, fuel trim not active or a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) stored after the diagnostic has been activated. Check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored, try to activate the diagnostic again. Sometimes several attempts will have to be made before the diagnostic is carried out.

Continue - Verification, continued

Verification, continued

- Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connect to VIDA station.
- Engine idling
- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Does the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) recur?
