Leakage. Permanent fault

EFI-446 Pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve, leakage

Checking solenoid valve

- Ignition off.
- Carefully disconnect the lilac hose from the solenoid valve.
- Connect a vacuum meter to the solenoid valve.
- Start the engine and idle it.
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) above 60°C.
Start pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

The vacuum meter should not give a reading.

OK - Checking pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve

Not OK - Checking solenoid valve signal cable

-------------------------------------------------

Checking pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve

- Disconnect pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve from pipe, leave hoses in place.
- Ignition on.

- Select the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to activate the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

No air should escape from the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve outlet.

OK - Checking for air leakage
Check air leakage in the exhaust system according to Check for air leaks in the intake system Air Leaks In the Intake System, Checking Checking for air leakage in the exhaust system Checking for Air Leakage In the Exhaust System. Then continue with Verification.

Not OK - Replacing component
Try a new pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve. Then continue with Verification.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Replacing component
- Try a new pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve.

Checking solenoid valve signal cable

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect solenoid valve connector.
Connect vacuum meter to solenoid valve.
- Start the engine and idle it.
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) above 60°C.

The vacuum meter should not give a reading.

OK - Checking cables and terminals
Check cable between solenoid valve terminal 2 and engine control module (ECM) #A37 for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. Then continue with Verification.

Not OK - Replacing component
Try a new solenoid valve. Then continue with Verification.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows:

- Ignition off.
- Reinstall all hoses/components.
- Ignition on.
- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Verification, continued

- Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from the VIDA station and use it in stand-alone mode.
- Run the engine to operating temperature (above 70°C).
- Air conditioning (A/C) off.
- Gear selector in P or N
- Engine idling
- Go into the Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) menu. Activate PAIR diagnostic.
- Wait until the diagnostic is complete. This can take up to 2 minutes.

Note! If the texts START CONDITIONS NOT MET or DIAGNOSTIC INTERRUPTED are displayed the diagnostic cannot be carried out. This can have several causes: for example. Short-term fuel trim unstable, long-term fuel trim stop, engine coolant temperature (ECT) above 103°C or a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been stored after the diagnostic has been activated. Check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored, restart the car and try to activate the diagnostic again. Sometimes several attempts will have to be made before the diagnostic is carried out.

Continue - Verification, continued

Verification, continued

- Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connect to VIDA station.
- Engine idling
- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?

Yes - Exit fault-tracing

No - Attempt New Test
