Checking pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve from pipe, leave hoses in place.
- Carefully disconnect the lilac hose from the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve.
- Connect a vacuum pump to the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve.
- Ignition on.
- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to activate pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

Air should escape from the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve outlet when the pump is operating.

OK - Checking pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pipe

Not OK - Checking pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) hose

-------------------------------------------------

Checking pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pipe
- Pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) valve off.

Caution! If the car has been driven recently the exhaust system can be very hot, let it cool down a little. Otherwise the special tool may get burnt.

- Remove the exhaust tail pipe.
- Install tool 999 5546 ADAPTOR 999 5546 Adapter with pressure regulator 999 5544 REGULATOR 999 5544 Regulator on the exhaust system.
- Adjust pressure to 0.4 bar . Depending on the condition of the exhaust system a lower pressure may be necessary.
Feel to see if air is escaping from the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pipe.

Is air escaping?

Yes - Checking vacuum hoses

No - Clean the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pipe and its connector to the manifold. Then continue with Verification.

- Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from the VIDA station and use it in stand-alone mode.
- Run the engine to normal operating temperature (over 70°C).
- Air conditioning (A/C) off.
- Gear selector in P or N.
- Let engine idle.
- Go into the Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) menu. Activate PAIR diagnostic.
- Wait until the diagnostic is complete. This can take up to 2 minutes.

Note! If the texts START CONDITIONS NOT MET or DIAGNOSTIC INTERRUPTED are displayed the diagnostic cannot be carried out. This can have several causes: for example. The short-term fuel trim is unstable, the long-term fuel trim is at an end position, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) is over 103°C or that a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been set after the diagnostic has been set. Check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored, restart the car and try to activate the diagnostic again. Sometimes several attempts will have to be made before the diagnostic is carried out.
