Diagnostic Functions

Diagnostic functions

General
The control module has a built-in diagnostic system, the Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system, which continuously monitors itself and its input and output signals.

DTCs

If the control module detects a fault it will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The control module can store up to 11 diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
If for some reason a fault disappears after the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been permanently stored in the control module, information about the fault is stored in the control module.

Reading off Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system

Fault data and other information can be read off using the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to the data link connector (DLC) under the center console cover. The Volvo Scan Tool (ST) communicates with the engine control module (ECM) via a standardized interface.

Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system

Using the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) it is possible to:
- Read off and erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored.
- activate components/functions according to predetermined patterns
- continuously monitor the value and status of input and output signals
- carry out a self test on the system components.
- Read off control module identification
To activate the Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system:
- ignition on
- battery voltage normal.

Note! With the Volvo on board diagnostic system (OBD) activated the screen will always fold up, without showing any information. The RTI system regains normal function when the diagnosis is finished!

Connecting the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

Carry out the following to connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST):
- Ignition off.
- install memory cassette
- connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) with the cabling to data link connector (DLC) under the center console cover.
- Ignition on
- Power up the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Select language, car and group of functions.
- Select system
- Select DIAGNOSTIC TEST to read and erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and activate components/functions.
- Select MONITOR TEST to continuously read off the values and status of control module input and output signals.
- select SYSTEM TESTS to activate a system test
- Select READ CM: ID to read control module P/N.

Reading and erasing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
Stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be erased using this function. The on-board diagnostic (OBD) system can identify 11 different faults in the form of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can only be erased when all stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been read off at least once.

Activating components/functions
Components and functions can be activated with this function. To activate components and functions the ignition must be on.
The following components can be activated:
- display, color scale
- sound, voice message function.
For further information about activation, see Activating components/functions Activating Components/Functions.

Reading off input and output signals
Using this function the values and status of the control module input and output signals can be continuously read off.
The following parameters can be read off:
- speed (from combined instrument panel)
- position, which direction the car is travelling in, backwards, forwards or stationary
- lighting, if the lighting is on or off.
- the year, according to the GPS system
- the day, according to the GPS system
- the hour, according to the GPS system
- the minute, according to the GPS system
- the second, according to the GPS system

Note! The time given is drawn from GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), in other words the time will deviate by a number of hours depending on which time zone the car is in.

For further information on parameters, refer to scrolling values and Volvo Scan Tool (ST). Signal too high Signal Too High.

Activating system test
A system test can be carried out with this function.
The following tests are carried out:
- check if CD-ROM player is connected
- check if CD-ROM player is in "eject position"
- check of what type of CD-ROM disc is in the CD-ROM player
- checking CD-ROM player function
- Checking control module memory
- checking function of GPS reception in control module
- checking TMC receiver
- checking FM receiver.

Note! The RTI system is equipped with either a TMC or an FM receiver. The FM receiver is for the Japanese market.

For further information about system test, see System Test System Test.

Reading off control module identification
The Volvo Scan Tool (ST) identifies control modules by reading a code from the memory of the module. This code contains information about the control module P/N.
