Reading off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Power seat

Query

Connection

Connection of Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
Volvo ST must be connected to both VIDA PC and vehicle to DLC in passenger compartment (models 1996-) or DLC B (models -1995).

Is Volvo ST connected and switched ON?

Yes - Preparations

No - Connecting the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

Connection of Volvo ST

- Ignition off.
- Insert blue memory cassette into Volvo ST.
- Connect adapter 951 1457-5 to cable 951 1458-3.
- Connect VIDA communication lead between the adapter and the VIDA PC.

Is the data link connector (DLC) located in passenger compartment?

Yes - Connection to DLC

No - Connection to DLC

------------------------

Connection to DLC
- Connect Volvo ST cable (p/n 951 1458-3) to the adapter (p/n 951 1459-1) for use in the engine compartment.
- Connect the adapter to DLC A or B, see DLC DLC.
- Connect the adapter supply lead to battery.
- Switch on Volvo ST.

Communication problems
Communication interrupted for one of the following reasons:
- A cable has come loose
- Volvo Scan Tool (ST) is switched off
- A communication problem has occurred in the VIDA application
- Check that the adapter is correctly connected to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Check that the VIDA-wiring between the adapter box and the VIDA- station is correctly connected.
- Check that the signal cable is correctly connected to the battery and Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Make sure that the correct memory cassette is inserted the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Check that the switch on the adapter box is ON.

Hint: If the car has an after market immobilizer installed (with a separate key) which interrupts power supply to the engine control module (ECM), the immobilizer should be deactivated with the appropriate key.

Consequent to the communication problem there is the following alternative:
1. Try again.
2. Carry out a fault-tracing for the communication problem.
3. Finish.

-------------------------------------------------

Checking communication

Checking the power seat functions
Try to operate the seat with the control buttons.

Are power seat controls working?

Yes - Checking version

No - Fault-tracing information
Carry out next fault-tracing in accordance with Symptom Table.

------------------------

Checking version

Does the car have a chassis number in the range 267000 - 273594 (4-door) or in the range 171000 - 177545 (5-door)?

Yes - Replace component

No - Checking power supply and the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

------------------------

Replace component
Cars in this chassis number range have the control module diagnostics function disabled. The control module operates normally when the seat is being operated but cannot be used for communication.
Replace with new control module.
In addition the diagnostics lead might not be connected up to the control module although the lead itself is there. Connect the diagnostics lead to position 4 in the connector A to enable communication.

Continue - Verification

------------------------

Checking communication with another system

- Ignition on.
- Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to data link connector (DLC).
Try to establish contact with the Anti-lock braking system (ABS) by reading diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Was contact established?

Yes - Checking for an open-circuit

No - Checking diagnostics wiring to data link connector (DLC)

------------------------

Checking for an open-circuit
Check wiring between data link connector (DLC) position 7 and control module 4-pin connector A, position 4, for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

------------------------

Checking diagnostics wiring to data link connector (DLC)

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from data link connector (DLC).
Connect an ohmmeter between data link connector (DLC) position 7 and control module 4-pin connector A, position 4.

The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.

OK - Checking communications wiring

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

------------------------

Checking communications wiring

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect seat control module.
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) position 7 and ground.

The voltmeter should read approx. 9-11 V.

OK - No Fault Found

Low - Checking for a short-circuit to ground

High - Checking for short-circuit to supply

------------------------

Checking for a short-circuit to ground
Check cable between data link connector (DLC) position 7 and control modules connected to this cable for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

------------------------

Checking for short-circuit to supply
Check cable between data link connector (DLC) terminal 7 and control modules connected to this cable for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

------------------------

Verification

Hint: Check that the fault is corrected after repair as follows.

- Ignition on.
- Reconnect components, connectors etc.
Try to establish contact with the ABS system by reading off DTC.

Has contact been established?

Yes - Troubleshooting procedure complete

No - Fault-tracing information

-------------------------------------------------

Fault-tracing information

Information

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?

Yes - Exit fault-tracing

No - Checking version

-------------------------------------------------

Fault-tracing information
The result shows that there is no point in continuing the tests.
Continue with fault-tracing of supply voltage to control module.

-------------------------------------------------

Checking communication equipment

Checking power supply

- Ignition ON.
Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to data link connector (DLC) on the car and turn on the power to the Scan Tool.
Check the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) display.

Is the display active?

Yes - Checking cabling

No - Checking supply to data link connector (DLC)

------------------------

Checking supply to data link connector (DLC)

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and remove connector from data link connector (DLC).
Connect a voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) position 16 and ground.

Voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking power ground to data link connector (DLC)

Not OK - Checking fuse and wiring

------------------------

Checking fuse and wiring
Check fuse and wiring between data link connector (DLC) terminal 16 and the positive terminal on the battery for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and short-circuit to ground in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
For more information on the circuit see the respective Wiring diagrams for the car and model year being tested.
