Reading off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Power seat (Continued)

Checking signal ground to data link connector (DLC)




- Ignition OFF.
Connect ohmmeter between data link connector (DLC) position 5 and ground.









The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.

OK - Checking supply to break-out box/adapter

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Check wiring between data link connector (DLC) position 5 and ground point for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Checking supply to break-out box/adapter




- Ignition ON.
- Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect adapter cable to Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from adapter box.
Connect a voltmeter between ground and the 25-pin connector position:
- 15 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 20 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 21 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 22 (data link connector (DLC) side)









The voltmeter should read battery voltage in all cases.

OK - Checking power ground to break-out box/adapter

Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

Try a new adapter cable to Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) adapter cable to data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect cable from adapter box.
Connect an ohmmeter between ground and 25-pin connector position:
- 23 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 24 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 25 (data link connector (DLC) side)









The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms in all cases.

OK - Checking signal ground

Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect adapter cable to data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect cable from adapter box.
Connect an ohmmeter between the 25-pin connector position 14 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground.









The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.

OK - Checking power supply to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).

Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

Checking power supply to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).








- Ignition ON.
- Connect Scan Tool (ST) adapter cable to data link connector (DLC).
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to the adapter box.
- Disconnect the 3-pin connector.
- Check that the adapter box power switch is turned ON.
Connect a voltmeter between the 3-pin connector and position:
- 1 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground
- 3 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground









The voltmeter should read 7-9 V between 1 and ground and battery voltage between 3 and ground.

OK - Checking ground to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)

Not OK - Replace component

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) adapter cable to the data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect 3-pin connector from Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
Connect an ohmmeter between the 3-pin connector position 2 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground.









The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.

OK - Checking power supply

Not OK - Replace component

- Ignition ON.
Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to data link connector (DLC) on the car and turn on the power to the Scan Tool.
Check the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) display.

Is the display active?

Yes - No Fault Found

No - Replace component

Try a new Volvo Scan Tool (ST).

Continue - Verification

Checking cabling








- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Disconnect 1/6 meter adapter cable.
Connect an ohmmeter between the 16-pin connector and the 25-pin connector in accordance with the table below














The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms for all readings.

OK - Checking short-circuit in adapter cable

Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

Checking short-circuit in adapter cable








- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect 1/6 meter adapter cable.
To determine if there is a short-circuit in the cable each position/lead must be checked for short-circuit to each other. The measurements must be carried out in the 16-pin connector.
Connect an ohmmeter between the 16-pin connector position:
- 1 and the other positions
- 2 and the other positions
Continue taking measurements in this way with the other positions.





The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance for all readings.

OK - Checking communication with another system

Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) with adapter and adapter cable.
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to data link connector (DLC)) on the car and turn on the power to the Scan Tool.
- Ignition ON.
Try to establish contact with the Anti-lock braking system (ABS) by reading diagnostic trouble code (DTC).





Was contact established?

Yes - No Fault Found

No - Replace component

Try a new Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and adapter box

Press "Continue" when the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect 4-pin connector A from the control module.
Connect a voltmeter between connector A, position 1, and ground.









Voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - No Fault Found

Not OK - Checking fuse

- Ignition OFF.
- Remove the automatic fuses, 11/39 for the left seat and 11/40 for the right seat.
Use an ohmmeter to check the automatic fuses are intact.









Is the fuse intact?

Yes - Checking +30 supply before the fuse

No - Replace component

Replace with new fuse and then fault-tracing in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Continue - Verification

- Ignition OFF.
Connect a voltmeter between the right/rear socket for fuses 39 and 40 and ground.





Voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking +30-supply after fuse

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

Check cable between battery positive terminal and fuse holder for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect 4-pin connector A from the seat control module.
Connect an ohmmeter between connector A, position 1 (green/red wire) and the fuse socket.









The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.

OK - Check ground lead

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation

Check cable between battery and the 4-pin connector, position A:1, for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. See appropriate Wiring diagram for the model year of the car.









Continue - Verification

- Disconnect 4-pin connector A.
Connect an ohmmeter between the 4-pin connector A, position 3 (black lead) and ground.









The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

OK - Replace component

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit

+30 supply and control module ground cable have no faults.
Try a new control module according to Control module, replace.

Check lead between 4-pin connector A, position 3 (black lead), and ground point 31/47 for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows.








- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect 4-pin connector A from the control module.
Connect a voltmeter between positions 1 and 3 in connector A.
