Replacement of bushing for torque arm

The following applies to turbocharged engines:

Actions for turbocharged engines of model year 1995 and later, as well as older turbocharged engine that have been modified.
- Remove the nut for bracket (A) on the charge air pipe by the torque rod.
- Loosen the clamp's screw (B) slightly.
- Move the bracket to one side so that it detaches from the mounting by the torque rod. Leave the bracket on the pipe.
On a modified turbocharged engine the charge air pipe is routed differently than shown, see Turbocharged engine, removal and installation Removal and Replacement. When installing in this case, see Lifting engine in Lifting Engine In.

- Remove the upper clamp (C) on the hose by the turbocharger.

- Loosen the charge air pipe (D), see the image.

Note! Cover the hole in the turbocharger outlet when the charge air pipe has been removed so that foreign objects cannot fall into the outlet.

- Disconnect the ignition cable from the holder on the reverse of the cover for the air cleaner.
- Detach and place the cover (E) as far forward as possible.

The following applies to all right-hand drive cars:

On right-hand drive cars, the brake master cylinder must be detached to give room for the tool (puller cylinder).
- Detach the brake tubes from the mountings on the firewall.
- Remove the brake master cylinder from the brake booster.
- Raise the brake master cylinder carefully to prevent damaging the brake tubes. (Hold the brake master cylinder in place using a cable tie.)

Note! Check cars with chassis numbers lower than those below. Replace the master cylinder if the seat has jammed on the push rod end. The seat must not be reinstalled in the master cylinder.

*) Loose push rod seat not found on cars with higher push rod seat or master cylinder in spare parts version.

The following applies to all cars with diesel engines:

- Remove the engine cover.
- Remove the EGR valve with pipe.
- Fold the EGR valve with pipe to one side.

The following applies to all engine types including turbo:

- Remove the screw from above the torque rod mounting by the engine.
- Fold up and place the torque rod above the bracket for the torque rod bushing.
- Take the hydraulic pump 999 5576 HYDRAULIC PUMP 999 5576 Hydraulic Pump and puller cylinder 999 5575 PULLER CYLINDER USED WITH HYDRAULIC PUMP -5576 999 5575 Puller Cylinder Used With Hydraulic Pump -5576.
- Insert 999 5588 Puller rod 999 5588 Puller Rod the puller cylinder.

- Press out the bushing from the bracket using the press tool 999 5668 Press tool 999 5668 Press Tool.

The following applies to all cars with naturally aspirated engines:

- Press out the bushing from the bracket using the press tool 999 5668 Press tool 999 5668 Press Tool.

Installing new bushing for the torque arm

Positioning the bushing:

- Install the bushing loosely with arrow marking (G) opposite the recess (H) on the torque arm's engine mount bracket.

Pressing the bushing in

Cars with turbocharger and/or diesel engines:

- Use press tool 999 5668 Press tool 999 5668 Press Tool.
- Press as far as possible towards the end of the press tool.

Cars with naturally aspirated engines:

- Use crimp sleeve 999 5668 Press tool 999 5668 Press Tool together with press tool 999 5668 Press tool 999 5668 Press Tool.
- Press as far as possible towards the end of the press tool.

Installing the engine stabilizer brace

The following applies to all engine types:

- Install the torque rod. Use new screws (D).
- Tighten the nut (D) to a torque of 35 Nm + 90°

Note! New screws and nuts must be used.

The following applies to turbocharged engines:

- Clean any oil away from between the hose and the charge air pipe.
- Remove the protective cover from the turbocharger outlet.

Note! Remove the protective cover.

- Install the charge air pipe in the hose on the turbocharger, at (C).

- Install the hose clamp a few millimeters in on the hose, see the arrow in the image.
- Position the hose clamp screw in the direction of the length of the car with the head facing backwards in the engine compartment.
- Tighten the hose clamp in the correct position by the turbocharger as below.

The following applies to all engine types:

Install:
- bracket on mounting by torque arm.
- nut for bracket, tighten to 16 Nm (12 ft.lb).
- Tighten the clamp to the charge air pipe.

Note! Check that the charge air pipe is in the holder on the torque arm so that the white marking is covered by the holder.

Install:
- the cover over the air cleaner.
- the ignition cable in the holders on the air cleaner cover's rear edge.

The following applies to right-hand drive cars:

Install:
- The master cylinder on the power brake booster. Tighten to 25 Nm.
- The brake pipes to the mountings on the firewall.

The following applies to all cars with diesel engines:

Install:
- the EGR valve.
- the engine cover.
