Malfunction Indicator Lamp

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP





The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The Automatic Transmission Control Module (TCM) ran also request that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) be lit.

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lights when the ignition is on and the engine is not running. This tests that the lamp itself is working.

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lights when the engine control module (ECM) has detected an emission related fault. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) goes out if the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects the disappearance of the fault.
