Without Scan Tool
Displaying DTCs Without a Scan Tool
OBD II is a legally required diagnostic system. The OBD II Data Link Connector (DLC) located in front of the shifter REQUIRES an OBD II Scan Tool or Volvo Scan Tool to be connected to the Engine Management System to read DTCs and parameters. Since OBD II covers only DTCs and parameters which alter exhaust emission levels, the information provided by an OBD II Scan Tool is not as comprehensive as that provided by the Volvo Scan Tool.
The Volvo Scan Tool communicates with the ECM through a form of serial communications. This not only affords more information about the DTCs compared to an OBD II Scan Tool, but enables the values of certain parameters to be read.
The earlier Data Link Connectors (DLC) with flashing LEDs (located under the hood) has been withdrawn from all 1996 and newer models. A Scan Tool MUST be used.
