Pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner, inspection
Checking belt movement
Note! There are two methods of checking whether seat belt tensioners have deployed or not. If in any doubt, use both.
- Indications on that the seat belt tensioner has deployed are.
- Pull out and release the seat belt repeatedly. Pull out the seat belt to its full length.
If the belt operates normally, the seat belt tensioner has not deployed.
- The seat belt sticks.
- The seat belt jerks in and out.
- The seat belt does not roll up properly or not at all.
1. The seat belt tensioner has deployed.
2. There are doubts whether the seat belt tensioner has deployed or not.
3. The seat belt tensioner has NOT deployed.
Select one of the alternatives.
1 - Seat belt tensioner deployed
2 - Checking seat belt tensioner piston position
3 - Seat belt tensioner NOT deployed

Seat belt tensioner NOT deployed
If the belt operates normally, the seat belt tensioner has not deployed.
Continue - FAULT FOUND

Checking seat belt tensioner piston position
- Make a note of radio code if anti theft coded radio installed.
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect battery negative lead.
- Remove "B" post inner panel. Pull off (attached with clips).
Warning! The battery must not be connected when checking piston position.
- Stick a wire into the bottom of the seat belt tensioner tube, as illustrated.
Check seat belt tensioner piston position.
- 1. Piston in position A.
- 2. Piston in position B.
Select one of the above alternatives.
1 - Seat belt tensioner deployed
2 - Seat belt tensioner NOT deployed

The seat belt tensioner has deployed
- Replace both seat belt tensioners in accordance with Seat-belt tensioners, replacement Seat-Belt Tensioners, Replacement.
Continue - FAULT FOUND

Seat belt tensioner NOT deployed
The seat belt tensioner has not deployed.
- Install "B" post inner panel.
