- Ignition off.
- Insert blue memory cassette into Volvo ST.
- Connect adapter 951 1457 Adaptor 951 1457 Adaptor to cable 951 1458 Scan tool cable 6 meters 951 1458 Scan Tool Cable 6 Meters.
- Connect VIDA communication lead between the adapter and the VIDA PC.

- Connect Volvo ST cable (p/n) 951 1458 Scan tool cable 6 meters 951 1458 Scan Tool Cable 6 Meters to the DLC in passenger compartment.
- Switch on Volvo ST.

Communication failure
Communication has been interrupted for one of the following reasons:
- The cable is disconnected
- The Volvo Scan Tool (ST) is disconnected
- Communication problems in the VIDA application
- Check that the adapter is correctly connected to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Check that the VIDA cable is correctly connected to the adapter junction box and VIDA cart.
- Check that the power cable is correctly connected to the battery and Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Ensure that VIDA memory cassette is inserted into the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Check that the junction box switch is on.
- Try to establish communication again or exit reading off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Depending on the communication fault, select one of the the following alternatives.
1. Try again.
2. Fault-trace the communication problems.
3. Stop fault-tracing.

Communication problems
Communication has been interrupted for one of the following reasons:
- The cable is disconnected
- Ignition off
The fault could also have been stored by a communication problem when the engine was started.
- Check that the data link connector (DLC) cable is secure.
- Try to establish communication again or exit reading off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Depending on the communication fault, select one of the the following alternatives.
1. Try again.
2. Fault-trace the communication problems.
3. Stop fault-tracing.

Checking the power supply
- Ignition off.
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to data link connector (DLC).
- Ignition on.
- Power up the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) with the switch on the adapter box. The adapter box, which is part of the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) kit, may sometimes be called the switch or just the adapter.
Check that the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) display lights up.
The Volvo Scan Tool (ST) display should light up.
OK - Checking communication with another control module
Not OK - Checking data link connector (DLC) power supply

- Ignition off.
- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from data link connector (DLC).
Connect a voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal 16 and ground.
The voltmeter should read supply voltage.
OK - Checking data link connector (DLC) power ground
Not OK - Checking fuse 15

Is the fuse intact?
Yes - Checking voltage before fuse 15
No - Checking for short-circuit

Check cable between data link connector (DLC) terminal 16 and fuse no. 15 for a short-circuit to ground in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition off.
Connect a voltmeter between ground and rear fuse holder battery side output for fuse 15.
The voltmeter should read supply voltage.

Check the cable between fuse 15 and data link connector (DLC) terminal 16 for an open circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Connect an ohmmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal 4 and ground.
The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.

Check the cable between data link connector (DLC) terminal 4 and ground terminal 31/15 for an open circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Connect a ohmmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal 5 and ground.

Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to data link connector (DLC) on the car and turn on the power to the Scan Tool.
Check the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) display.
Is the display active?
Yes - Checking cabling
No - Checking supply to data link connector (DLC)

- Disconnect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and remove connector from data link connector (DLC).
Connect a voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) position 16 and ground.
Voltmeter should read battery voltage.
OK - Checking power ground to data link connector (DLC)
Not OK - Checking fuse and wiring

Check fuse and wiring between data link connector (DLC) terminal 16 and the positive terminal on the battery for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault and short-circuit to ground in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

Check wiring between data link connector (DLC) position 5 and ground point for open-circuit in accordance with Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

- Ignition ON.
- Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect adapter cable to Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from adapter box.
Connect a voltmeter between ground and the 25-pin connector position:
- 15 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 20 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 21 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 22 (data link connector (DLC) side)
The voltmeter should read battery voltage in all cases.
OK - Checking power ground to break-out box/adapter
Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

Try a new adapter cable to Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
Press "Continue" when the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) adapter cable to data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect cable from adapter box.
Connect an ohmmeter between ground and 25-pin connector position:
- 23 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 24 (data link connector (DLC) side)
- 25 (data link connector (DLC) side)
The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms in all cases.
OK - Checking signal ground
Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect adapter cable to data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect cable from adapter box.
Connect an ohmmeter between the 25-pin connector position 14 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground.
The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.
OK - Checking power supply to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
Not OK - Replace the adapter cable

- Ignition ON.
- Connect Scan Tool (ST) adapter cable to data link connector (DLC).
- Connect Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to the adapter box.
- Disconnect the 3-pin connector.
- Check that the adapter box power switch is turned ON.
Connect a voltmeter between the 3-pin connector and position:
- 1 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground
- 3 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground
The voltmeter should read 7-9 V between 1 and ground and battery voltage between 3 and ground.
OK - Checking ground to the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
Not OK - Replace component

- Ignition OFF.
- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) adapter cable to the data link connector (DLC).
- Disconnect 3-pin connector from Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
Connect an ohmmeter between the 3-pin connector position 2 (data link connector (DLC) side) and ground.
The ohmmeter should read 0 ohms.
OK - Checking power supply
Not OK - Replace component
