Ignition Lock Cable: Service and Repair

1. Preparations
- Remove:
Battery negative lead
Center console as per steps 3 and 4 of Shift Cable A/T replacement, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.





2. Remove:
- Steering column covers
- Soundproofing panel and knee bolster underneath dashboard
- Fold back carpet and remove side panel.





3. Disconnect cable from ignition switch
- Move gear shift lever to position P.
- Turn ignition key to position I or II.
- Depress cable end locking tabs in ignition switch and withdraw cable.





4. Removal
- Disconnect cable from adjustment point and locking plate in gear selector housing.
- Right-hand drive models only, remove:
Lamp holder from light molding.
Remove cable from retaining clip and cable.





5. Installation of new cable
- Insert cable in opening in center console.
- On right-hand drive models only:
Ensure that cable is positioned to left of heater drain hose as illustrated. See arrow.
- Secure cable with retaining clip
- Connect cable to locking plate
- Install cable adjuster in gear selector housing.





6. Left-hand drive models:
- Insert cable in ignition switch.
- Clip cable in position.
- Four clips are used on left-hand drive models.





7. On right-hand drive models:
- Insert cable in ignition switch.
- Clip cable in position.
Two clips are used on right-hand drive models.

Basic Adjustment Of Cable





8. Move gear shift lever from P to another position.
- Clearance between locking tabs at ignition switch end is approx. 7 mm (0.28 inch).
Adjust at the gear lever end.





9. Turn ignition key to position I or II.
- Press cable into position in ignition lock.
- Ensure that locking tabs are securely engaged in ignition lock.
- Move gear shift lever to position P. Check that clearance between cable and locking plate is approx. 0.5-1 mm (0.19-0.4 inch).

10. Move gear shift lever to position P.
- Ignition key should be easy to remove from ignition lock.
- If key cannot be removed, cable is too short.
- Adjust by slackening cable at adjustment point and repeat check.





11. Move lever to position other than P.
- It should not be possible to remove the ignition key from ignition lock.
- If key can be removed, cable is too long.
Adjust by tightening cable at adjustment point until key cannot be removed.





12. Check Of Shift-lock Override Function
- Move gear shift lever to position P and turn ignition key to position I or II.
- Do NOT depress brake pedal.
- Depress the override button.
Try moving the gear shift from position P.
It should be possible to move the gear shift selector.
- Return lever to position P and remove ignition key
- Press override button.
It should not now be possible to move lever from position P.
Override function should operate only when ignition key is in position I or II.
- If adjustment is needed, proceed to next step.





13. Adjustment of shift-lock override function
- If the gear shift selector can be moved from the P position with the ignition key removed from the ignition lock:
Tighten cable by turning at adjustment point approx. 1 turn in the direction of the arrow on the picture.
Check function.
If required tighten cable 1/2 turns more, turning adjuster in the direction of the arrow on the picture

Supplementary work





14. Reinstall side panel and fold back carpet.
- Install:
Knee bolster, tighten nuts to: 20 Nm.

Steering column covers
Center console as per step 8 of Shift Cable A/T replacement, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
